You will have a scar right round each ear. The scar behind your ear and its continuation across part of the scalp will be hidden by hair (except in the case of a man who becomes totally bald). The scar in front of the ear will be visible but usually it is faint and doesn’t shriek its presence. However, scars can widen and drop unpredictably and sometimes a hairstyle which covered them at first ceases to cover them later. If an incision is made under your chin to remove neck fat, a small scar will show here. (more…)

You might have a throbbing headache for a day or two but otherwise little pain. Your head will be bandaged for two or three days, after which you can gently wash your hair, which will probably feel matted after the surgery. Stitches are removed about ten days after the operation, unless they are the dissolving kind. (more…)

You can go home the same day, with two small strips of bandage over your stitches to protect them. These can be removed a few days later, when your stitches come out. Your eyelids will ache initially but the pain should not be severe. If it is, call a doctor, as there may be internal bleeding. (more…)

We all have moles, usually about 20 or 30 of them. We are born with a fair number of them, but some new ones develop up until the age of about 30. They start out as brownish-looking freckles and then sink lower into the skin, leaving fibrous scar tissue in their wake, which is what gives them the appearance of a raised brownish lump. By the time we have reached 40, they have sunk lower still and tend to look paler but more bulbous. (more…)

Just as upper arms reveal ageing or significant weight loss by sagging, so too do the inner thighs and buttocks. Although the scarring that results from the trimming of excess fat and skin is as extensive as in arm reduction surgery, its positioning in buttock reduction makes it less of a problem. Both the body and normal clothing help conceal it. This is not however the case for thigh reduction although only mini-skirts and swimsuits may be awkward to wear. (more…)

A potential recipient of bovine collagen implant must first be tested for possible allergy to the substance. The test is simple: a small amount of collagen is injected painlessly into the forearm through a tiny needle. The dermatologist examines the area tested a few days later, and again after a month. Almost everyone allergic to collagen shows a reaction within two days — an itchy, red bump appears at the site of the pin-prick. A few people might not show a reaction for up to four weeks. (more…)

You will need to stay in hospital for up to seven days and you will almost definitely need analgesics to lessen the pain. You will have bandages taped over your abdomen for at least ten days, but you will be able to remove them to bath and apply clean ones after the first couple of days. Drainage tubes will be removed after two days. You may need to have a catheter for the first two days too. (more…)

The medical meaning of the word tumor is simply a swelling or lump raised above the skin surface. Although some tumors are cancers, most are not and the word can be applied to something as harmless as a wart.
Harmless skin lumps of one type or another are exceedingly common: in fact everyone has one or more at some time in their life. Although moles, which are raised, could also be considered here they are dealt with in detail in the section on birthmarks and pigment. This section deals with both harmless or benign lumps as well as true cancers or malignant lumps. (more…)
