Lie on your back on a bed, shoulders and neck supported by the bed with your head just over the edge so it falls backwards. Relax completely. Now slowly raise head, chin first until your chin touches your chest to a count of five. Slowly lower again to the same count until you’re back to the completely relaxed position. Repeat five times. These are plugs of sebum or oil which clog the pores and blacken due to oxidation on exposure to the air. They can easily be removed if you take care not to damage the skin which could result in infection. Heat the skin first by applying a hot compress made of 1 tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda to a pint of hot water (as hot as your skin will take). Apply and re-apply the compress to the blackhead areas for about two minutes to open the pores and loosen the material clogging them. Then gently, with the tips of your fingers wrapped in a paper tissue, (not your nails) ease out the plug. Finish off with an application of alcohol or antiseptic cream. (more…)

You will have a scar right round each ear. The scar behind your ear and its continuation across part of the scalp will be hidden by hair (except in the case of a man who becomes totally bald). The scar in front of the ear will be visible but usually it is faint and doesn’t shriek its presence. However, scars can widen and drop unpredictably and sometimes a hairstyle which covered them at first ceases to cover them later. The best results are achieved when a face lift is done earlier rather than later. Ideally chemical face peels and dermabrasion should not leave scars. However, if an area is burned too deeply with the chemical or dermabrasion is too deep, lumpy and angry red scarring can result. This may or may not fade in time — sometimes it is permanent.
All injections leave tiny puncture marks, so this will occur after collagen implants. Normally they are virtually invisible. They might show up as white dots, however, if you have very dark skin, but the procedure isn’t really advisable for dark-skinned people anyway. (more…)
A chemical face peel is an unpleasant-sounding procedure and unpleasant to experience too. It is usually carried out under sedation and takes about an hour if the whole of your face is being done. The surgeon first carefully cleans your face, then applies a strong chemical solution to all the areas where you want wrinkling removed. This stings, strongly but briefly. Then the treated areas are covered with layers of adhesive tape and you can go home.
Dermabrasion is a one-step procedure, which can be carried out under local or general anaesthetic and takes about an hour. A small rotating wire brush or metal wheel is used to smooth the rough areas you are having treated. (more…)

You might have a throbbing headache for a day or two but otherwise little pain. Your head will be bandaged for two or three days, after which you can gently wash your hair, which will probably feel matted after the surgery. A jutting or receding chin often causes grief to its owner but, whereas a great many people seek cosmetic surgery for noses, far fewer even know that anything can be done to the chin. Sometimes, in fact, it is the shape of the chin that throws an otherwise innocuous nose into undue prominence and a surgeon may suggest correction of the former rather than the latter. In a few cases, however, surgery for both the chin and the nose may be aesthetically beneficial.
The chin is, of course, part of the jaw but surgery for the chin is a different matter entirely from surgery for the entire jaw. The latter is a major procedure in which usually the teeth need realignment too because deformities of the jaw affect bite. Such surgery is not carried out by cosmetic surgeons but by oral and maxillofacial surgeons, working together with orthodontists. Chin surgery is concerned only with the small part of the jaw that sticks out under your mouth but it is not undertaken by all cosmetic surgeons. Ask for guidance from your general practitioner. The scar will be about three inches in length but it will be hidden by the crease of the ear.
Infection is not common but it is vital to call a doctor at the very first signs — increased rather than decreased reddening, swelling and aching of the ear after the first few days — because infection that is not treated quickly can lead to permanent damage to the cartilage of the ear and a misshapen appearance possibly worse than the one that has been corrected. As ears are virtually fully grown by the age of six, ears that are going to be unacceptably prominent will definitely be noticeable by that age. Unfortunately, it is other children not similarly afflicted who tend to notice them most and a child’s life may be made a misery by teasing in the early school days. On the plus side, this is one cosmetic operation which can be carried out in childhood and is usually obtainable on the NHS without more than a few months wait. (more…)
