Oily Skin Special Care

Breakouts are supposed to stop after our teens, right? Wrong more than 60 percent of women continue to get pimples and blackheads into their thirties and forties. Those with darker and olive skin tones suffer more—though they don’t burn in the sun and tend to wrinkle less. The chief culprit is overactive sebaceous glands. Pores become enlarged. A greasy shine appears on the chin, nose, and forehead. The surface of the skin can be coarse and lack elasticity. The temptation is to overclean, using harsh astringents, but this just makes the glands produce more oil. Start within.
Alcohol, caffeine, spices, and foods containing iodides, like shellfish, can sometimes stimulate oil production. Don’t touch your face, and don’t exercise while you’re wearing foundation or moisturizer.
CLEANSER.
Use a mild cleanser to wash your face twice a day, but do not scrub away natural oils that your skin needs for protection. Gel cleansers clean gently without leaving a residue.
TONER.
Alcohol-based astringents are ideal for wiping away leftover residue from cleansers and excess oil between cleansings.
MOISTURIZER.
Look for lighter, noncomedogenic (does not clog pores) or nonacnegenic (does not irritate pores) formulations made especially for oily skin. Humectants can help soothe scaly reactions to acne medications.
EXFOLIATES.
Gentle exfoliating may help keep skin clean and absorbent, so that minimal amounts of moisturizer can be used to maximum effect. Retin-A and Renova, as well as gentle AHA peels, can help certain acne-related problems.
MAKEUP.
Look for oil-free foundation, powder, and blush, as well as noncomedogenic and nonacnegenic makeup. Powder blush is less likely to aggravate acne than cream or gel.
BREAKOUTS.
Minor breakouts can be controlled with over-the- counter solutions of benzoyl peroxide. Dermatologists treat more serious conditions with more serious solutions. Oral antibiotics, like tetracycline and erythromycin, attack pore-clogging bacteria and are available in topical form as well. Retin-A short-circuits pimple production by unclogging follicles below the surface of the skin. More holistic approaches combine gentle cleansing routines using potent plant extracts like apple, cucumber, and tea-tree oils, proper nutrition, and exercise to help fight unruly skin.
BLACK SKIN.
It can seem shiny and does not have the same problems with dryness as lighter skin, but that doesn’t always mean black skin is oily. It reflects the light differently, giving off a kind of luminosity. Don’t try to remove oil with harsh astringents. Cleanse and moisturize with gentle products geared to your skin type. Excess shine can be controlled by using oil-free bases and powder.
How can I clear up blackheads?
Regular deep- cleaning facials clean out your pores—and, unfortunately, your pocketbook. Over- the-counter salycylic acid solutions, like the ones found in certain astringents and acne medications, can help. So can creams containing benzoyl peroxide, which kills bacteria. Retin-A clears blackheads on top of treating acne by unclogging pores. Light exfoliation twice a week will also help to keep pores clean.
Due to hormonal fluctuations, your skin will be oilier when you’re premenstrual.
