Masks and Scrubs for Oily Skin
To make a sallow, dull skin look bright, use the Simple Scrub given in the normal skin section, especially last thing at night to remove the day’s accumulated grime. In the morning use one of the cleansers given in this section. Always apply the masks to a cleaned, very slightly damp skin.
Simple Egg and Lemon Mask
Separate an egg and put the yolk into a small cup or egg cup. Add two or three drops of lemon juice, mix together, and leave to stand for about half an hour. Then apply to the skin, leaving for about twenty minutes while you relax. Rinse off with tepid water, pat the skin almost dry and apply a moisturizer. You can use up the egg white in Egg and Lemon Toner.
Yogurt and Oatmeal Pack
Quantities of fine oatmeal and plain yogurt (preferably live) can be combined together to form a smooth paste. This can be used alone with just a squeeze of fresh lemon juice added. Or you can combine it with any of the following: grated carrot, grated potato, pulped cucumber, mashed pear, mashed tomato, pureed parsley (puree parsley with a little water in a mortar and pestle or in a blender). All of these fruits and vegetables have good cleansing and refining properties. Leave for twenty minutes, then rinse with tepid water, pat dry and apply moisturizer.
Milk Pack
- 2 teaspoons dried milk powder
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 egg white
- 1 cup of horsetail or yarrow infusion, made with
- 2 tablespoons of herb.
Mix together the honey and dried milk. Make up the infusion of horsetail or yarrow and, when cool, strain it and add to the milk and honey. Whisk the egg white until fairly stiff and add it to the mixture. Spread over the skin and leave for twenty minutes. Rinse with tepid water, pat dry and apply moisturizer.
Peppermint Pack
This is a stimulating and refreshing pack. Do not use it on a sensitive skin with a tendency to redness or broken veins.

- 1 egg white
- kaolin powder
- 1/4 of a cucumber
Put the peppermint leaves, egg white and cucumber into a blender and blend until a smooth puree is formed. If you do not have a blender, roughly chop the cucumber and put it through a sieve, chop the mint leaves and pound them in a pestle, then whisk the egg white and mix them all together. Add the vegetable mixture to enough kaolin powder to give a smooth paste, then apply to the face, leaving it for about fifteen minutes. Rinse off with tepid water, pat dry, apply moisturizer. The peppermint will probably give a slightly tingling sensation while it is on the skin.
Fuller’s Earth Mask
If your skin texture is dreadful, with open pores and a tendency to break out into spots at times, Fuller’s Earth makes a good base for a mask. It contains minerals and helps to draw out impurities from the skin, refining open pores and helping to extract blackheads and cut down greasiness.
Mix together the egg white, some Fuller’s Earth and a small amount of herbal infusion to form a smooth paste. Amounts will vary, depending on the size of the egg white. Apply to the skin, leave for fifteen to twenty minutes, rinse with tepid water, pat skin dry. Apply moisturizer.
In time you will feel confident to experiment by using any of the basic mask ingredients with various herbs and fruits and vegetables. Keep a record of your experiments.
