Skincare, a Little Light Magic
Take non-ablative skin rejuvenation — treatment that does not remove the surface of the skin. It uses intense pulsed light at specific frequencies to restore youthful feel and function to aged or neglected skin. Similar light-based treatments work other wonders: guided by the melanin (colour) in a person’s skin, a few high- tech machines are capable of delivering a charge to hair follicles to disable growing hairs and allow unwanted ones to be shed permanently. This can be a godsend to women with `moustache’ problems and to men who since puberty have kept their shirts on at the beach, embarrassed about excessive hair on shoulders and back.
Then there is the exciting new grow-your-own-cell treatment. Known as Isologen, it may, before long, render injections of bovine collagen and silicon redundant. A person’s own skin cells – fibroblasts – are harvested by a surgeon, cultured in a laboratory and later injected into areas of their face to clear lines, redefine smoothness, soften scars, and restore firmness and contours. Like dietary changes and some of the new biologically active skincare products, Isolagen is a procedure designed to activate your body’s own ability to create good-quality collagen.
Healing Laser
The laser, another light-based treatment, which was once only used as an alternative to chemical skin peels, has been born again in a new form: called Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) it is a gentle, penetrating and healing form of coherent light, and an effective way of rejuvenating skin. Unlike most lasers, LLLT does not cut or burn. Instead, it enlivens and regenerates tissues through photobiostimulation, firming, revitalizing and encouraging the formation of new collagen. For many years this healing laser has been used with great success in the treatment of sports injuries, especially in Russia where light medicine and energy medicine are far in advance of Europe and the United States. Only recently has LLLT been applied to skin beauty. The results are excellent. Leslie was introduced to it by pioneering Russian doctor Lyudmila Nikolenko. Nikolenko combines 30 minutes of LLLT photostimulation with ten minutes of electroacupuncture. Several treatments over a period of a few weeks brings such transformative results – smoother, firmer, more youthful and radiant skin – that plastic surgery can lose its appeal.
Sunlight Matters
Your face, like the rest of your body, needs sunlight to look and function at its best. Biophoton research indicates that healthy skin cells ’suck order’ from UV light and that this enhances the functioning of the living matrix. Skin behaves in a younger way and becomes more radiant. Get too much sun exposure and you can burn and damage your skin. Gettoo little and you miss out on the blessings the sunhas to offer.
Smart Sunbathing
If you are unused to sun exposure, and especially if your skin is very fair, begin with short sessions of just 10 minutes and work up to half an hour a day. The best time to get in the sun is before 11am or after 3pm.
Women who conscientiously slather on sunscreen to protect themselves from skin cancer may inadvertently increase their risk of it. Sunscreens are made of chemicals absorbed into the skin that contribute to toxic overload and can be carcinogenic. It’s far better to use hats and clothing to screen you from the sun, or to use products that contain inert substances like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Mineral make-up will protect your face.
