Just to get you started, here are some of my own favourite occasions and blends to suit — a few of which are blatantly obvious!

A CHRISTMAS PARTY

SUGGESTED BLENDS

1. Equal quantities of cinnamon bark and clove with a larger quantity of orange.
2. Equal quantities of cedarwood, frankincense and myth. If you find this too heavy, add a few drops of bergamot, mandarin or orange to lift the fragrance.

A CHILDREN‘S PARTY

SUGGESTED BLENDS

1. Equal quantities of geranium, lavender and mandarin.
2. Equal quantities of bergamot, coriander and petitgrain. 3. Equal quantities of clary sage and lavender with a larger quantity of bergamot.

DINNER A DEUX

SUGGESTED BLENDS

1. Equal quantities of patchouli and ylang ylang with a smaller quantity of rose otto.
2. Use rosewater instead of plain water as your base, then add some sandalwood essence and a smaller quantity of rose otto. 3. Equal quantities of clary sage and vetiver, heightened with a few drops of geranium or neroli or ylang ylang — or a little of each.

AN EASTER CELEBRATION

Vanilla is a lovely aroma to vaporize at Eastertime. You will find a recipe for homemade vanilla extract, and some suggestions for its use in the essential oil burner. Suffice it to say here that vanilla mixes especially well with cinnamon bark and citrus essences. Alternatively, you might prefer to vaporize one of the spicy floral blends suggested below.

SUGGESTED BLENDS

1. Equal quantities of coriander, geranium and ylang ylang.
2. Equal quantities of bergamot, geranium and lavender with a touch of cinnamon bark.

MIDSUMMER’S EVE

Astrologers believe that everything on Earth has a heavenly ruler. Therefore the most appropriate essences to vaporize for a midsummer’s celebration are those which are traditionally associated with the sun. These include angelica, bergamot, black pepper, cinnamon bark, clove, ginger, juniper, lemon, melissa, orange and rosemary.

SUGGESTED BLENDS

1. Equal quantities of bergamot and juniper.
2. Equal quantities of angelica and lemon.
   A larger quantity of bergamot, made spicy with a touch of clove.

HARVEST FESTIVAL

To represent the bountiful Earth, include one of the full-bodied essences in your blends: frankincense, patchouli, rose otto, sandalwood or vetiver. Mix this with a larger quantity of one or more of the citrus essences: bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, lime, mandarin or orange.

SUGGESTED BLENDS

1. Equal quantities of bergamot, grapefruit and orange with a smaller quantity of frankincense.
2. Equal quantities of cedarwood and frankincense, a larger quantity of mandarin, and a touch of rose otto if you wish.

HALLOWE’EN

Choose dark and mysterious essences such as patchouli or vetiver, heightened with evergreen oils such as cedarwood, cypress, juniper or pine. Clary sage is a good bridge between patchouli and vetiver and the evergreens. Just for impish fun, you might like to add some valerian essence to your Hallowe’en potion — an evil-smelling oil guaranteed to swing the witch’s cat into ecstasy! But I offer no clues to its blending, nor take any responsibility for suggesting it! The choice is yours, dear reader — trick or treat?
