Self Made Face Packs: Moisturize and Tone the Complexion
Most skins (except the very sensitive) will benefit from a weekly face pack. These are designed to deep cleanse, tighten and brighten, moisturize and generally tone the complexion. One of the most beneficial substances to use as a face pack is yoghurt (live natural yoghurt, full-fat if possible) — beneficial, that is, if you are not allergic to dairy products. Fresh live yoghurt, without additives, can help all skin types, particularly excessively dry or oily skin. The lactic acid of yoghurt (due to its fermentation) is similar to that of the skin acid mantle, and appears to exert a balancing action on the secretion of skin fluids.
Another wonderful healing and moisturizing agent is raw honey, that is to say, honey that has not been subjected to pasturization. It draws moisture from the air and imparts a soft dewy glow to the complexion. Honey is suitable for all skin types — from the driest to the oiliest.
Oily, sallow or fatigued skin will benefit enormously from a face pack containing Brewer’s yeast powder (available from health shops). Brewer’s yeast cleanses, nourishes, tightens and tones the skin. Very oily or acneous skin may need the deep cleansing powers of Fuller’s Earth, a powdered clay with wonderful skin healing properties. The same quantity of Fuller’s Earth can be used to replace Brewer’s yeast in the face pack suggested for oily skin and acne.
Oatmeal or ground almonds can be used as a binding agent for face packs. Oatmeal is cleansing, softening and nourishing for all skin types. Ground almonds smooth and soften drier skin.
When mixing face packs, include an essential oil suitable for your skin condition. Otherwise, use lavender, which is a good for all skins.
FOR ‘NORMAL’, COMBINATION AND AGEING COMPLEXIONS
3 teaspoonsful of live, full-fat natural yoghurt
1 teaspoonful of cold-pressed vegetable oil
1 to 2 teaspoonsful of oatmeal to bind
Mix the essential oil into the base oil and stir in the other ingredients to form a paste. Apply a thin layer to face and neck, but keep well away from the eye area. Leave on for 10-15 minutes; rinse off with cool water.
FOR DRY SKIN
3 teaspoonsful of live, full-fat natural yoghurt 1 teaspoonful of honey
1 teaspoonful of cold-pressed vegetable oil 1 drop of essential oil
1 or 2 teaspoonsful of ground almonds
Mix and apply to the skin as in the previous recipe.
FOR OILY SKIN AND ACNE
2 teaspoonsful of live, full-fat natural yoghurt
11/2 teaspoonsful of Brewer’s yeast powder
1/2 teaspoonful of jojoba oil
1 or 2 teaspoonsful of warm water (more if necessary)
Mix together the jojoba and essential oil, then add the other ingredients to form a smooth paste. Oily or congested skin does not readily absorb substances unless warm and moist. Therefore it is important to apply the face pack after a bath or facial sauna. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and rinse off with cool water.
MOISTURIZING FACE PACK FOR ALL SKINS
2 teaspoonsful of honey
Stir the essential oil into the honey and apply to face and neck. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes, preferably whilst relaxing in a warm, steamy bath. Rinse off with cool water — and admire the youthful, dewy glow!
