Hair Relaxers, biggest mistakes to apply chemicals
When we relax our own hair, one of the biggest mistakes we make is applying the chemicals to the entire hair shaft. If you must straighten at home, keep the following in mind:
- For touch-ups, always protect your scalp and your skin at the hairline by applying a base of petroleum jelly before you use your relaxer.
- Saturate previously relaxed hair with a creamy moisturizing conditioner to protect it from the chemicals. And who can’t use more conditioning?
- Always shampoo and rinse one more time to ensure that there is no chemical residue in the hair. Chemical residue can cause irritation and breakage.
- Work the relaxer through the new growth with your gloved fingers. Do not comb the relaxer through your hair because it will overprocess the previously relaxed hair.
- Use lye-base relaxers.
- Never relax and color at the same time, unless bald is the look you’re going for.
Yet another thought: I got it, you don’t have the money! You may want to inquire at your favorite salon and the more upscale salons about participating in their training nights. A stylist in training is supervised by the licensed professionals in applying relaxers and colors, and in wielding the scissors. Or if you’re more adventurous, check out the beauty schools.
