Brooch in the Shape of a Bulldog’s Head

As portraiture continues to exist in the realm of painting, so the tradition of reproducing subjects that are gratifying to look at or that evoke our feelings remains alive in jewelry making. Of course, one of these subjects is man’s perennial best friend, the dog.

This brooch originated from metal cast in the shape of a bulldog’s head. The shape and markings in the face are defined by a series of clearly delineated bands sprinkled with châton-cut rhinestones, giving the brooch a stylized open-work look, illuminated by the two glass-paste red cabochons for the eyes.

Sautoir with Opalescent Glass Beads

The main feature of this sautoir is made up of three graduated strands of opalescent glass beads in two shades of pink, interspersed with rhinestones and clear crystals. Joining the strands are two rows of opaque white crystal and small Venetian glass beads. The back part of the necklace consists of a single strand of nine rose-colored opalescent glass beads flanging from the sautoir is a partial strand of pink and transparent crystal beads.

This type of thin metal chain is called a “Parisian.” Since it was so much stronger than waxed cotton thread, which was generally used around this time, it was considered preferable for the heavy glass beads.

Bangle With Compact

This bracelet was found in its original box with a picture of Josephine Baker’s face, her signature, and the name of one of her films, Zouzou from 1934, on the inside. The bracelet appears to be a piece of costume jewelry created as a promotional device for the film, given the fact that another bracelet, also from Flamand and with the same picture, signature, and film title, was described in 1988 by C. Davidor and R. G. Dawes in The Bakelite Book. This double-purpose bracelet is made up of a large band surmounted by black Bakelite, with a brass insert that hides a compartment for a compact.
