Cold and Flu, how to look after yourself
- There is no magic cure for colds or flu, but taking certain steps can help you recover more quickly:
- Make sure you know what you are suffering from — a cold or flu.
- Stay in bed or rest quietly for at least three days. Eat light meals and drink plenty of liquids.
- Take 3 g of vitamin C every four hours until you recover, because the virus cannot survive in the presence of a lot of vitamin C.
- Take one dessert spoon of elderberry extract four times a day while you are ill.
- Take ten drops of grapefruit-pip extract (Citricidal) in water three times a day for protection against bacterial and fungus infections.

- Garlic, Echinacea drops, ginger and cat’s claw tea are also helpful.
- Steep finely chopped wild wormwood leaves in boiling water, allow to cool and drink three times daily. You can also boil the leaves in water and inhale the steam to relieve nasal congestion.
- Suck throat pastilles containing zinc for sore throats. Follow the package instructions, because too much zinc can causenausea.
- Use a decongestant if necessary, so that you do not constantly have to blow your nose hard.
- Use a warm humidifier at night if it helps you feel better. Cold air misters are more likely to spread mildew and mould.
- Blow one nostril at a time. If you blow both at once, too much pressure builds up and you could blow infected mucus into your ears and sinuses.
- Sometimes the fibres in tissues (paper hankerchiefs) can cause an allergic reaction in susceptible people.
- Stop smoking.
- If you have had flu, don’t begin exercising until all your symptoms have gone.
When to see your doctor
- if your symptoms get worse or if you develop additional symptoms
- if your symptoms last longer than five days without getting noticeably better
- if your temperature is higher than 37,5°C for three days in a row, or if it goes higher than 39,5°C
- if your sore throat is accompanied by a fever of 38,3°C or higher, for longer than 24 hours — this may be an indication of a streptococcal infection in the throat that requires treatment with antibiotics
- if you cough up green, dark yellow or brown mucus — this can be a sign of a bacterial infection in the lungs or sinuses
- if you have any pain in your chest, are short of breath or find it difficult to breathe — this can indicate pneumonia, especially if you have a fever as well
- if your child’s cold seems worse after about a week, if he struggles to breathe, has earache or a high temperature which does not improve after 48 hours, or if he has a sore throat that lasts for longer than three days
