Bring Natural Back to your Home
Natural living rooms
The hearth has always been the focal point of the home. It is the heart of the home where people gather and enjoy each other’s company and warmth. Even today a brightly burning fire is an immediate attraction and homes with fireplaces have an immediate feeling of focus and exude warm vibrations. The chimney provides a channel up to the heavens and into the air, and it is via the chimney that good and bad spirits can have access to your home. As long as we burn environmentally friendly fuel, having a fireplace still remains a powerful focal point of the home.
If you are building a fireplace, try to fit it with a high-performance combustion stove.
Quarry, slate and terracotta tiles all make good floor tiles which can harmonize with an older style house. Although they are made from natural materials, these tiles can be cold and hard on the feet. You can always put colorful rugs and mats on floor tiles in the kitchen as these are easy to shake out and wash. They can add a warm, friendly feeling to your kitchen.
Natural bedrooms
Make sure your bedroom is not overcrowded with furniture and has plenty of cupboard space as this will allow air and ch’i to flow freely around the room.
The bed is the most important piece of furniture in the bedroom, so take time and care when you are selecting one. Make sure it affords your back just the right amount of support and that any internal springs do not create any magnetic disturbance. A bad bed can put strain on your spine and also affect the quality of your sleep and consequently your energy levels throughout the following day. It is also most important to use natural materials on your bedcovers and curtaining, as well as on the floor and walls of your bedroom.
Your bedroom can often be a place where you can find rest and tranquillity away from the family. Try to create a definite relaxation area here, perhaps in a corner of the room or near a window. Place a comfortable chair and a small table where you could enjoy a breakfast or cup of tea in this space, enjoying the peaceful view stretching away in front of you. You can screen this area from the rest of the room with a decorative screen of plants.
Natural bathrooms
Although en suite bathrooms have gained popularity, these usually have hard divisions separating them from the bedroom. While it is convenient to have a shower and sink next to the bedroom, too often the bath is squeezed into a small, airless space. This means that bathing for the most part takes place in cramped conditions. I feel that a toilet should never be en suite as it will lack privacy and bad odors invariably permeate into the bedroom. But the bath itself does not need to be entirely separate from the bedroom. Creating a bathroom adjoining a bedroom could mean changing the level of the floor or using a low screen of plants as a soft divider. Ideally, the bath should be housed in a good-sized room with plenty of natural light and, if possible, a view!
If you are replacing the original bath and sink, a modern metal bath is the best option. Choose tiles made of clay or decorated in warm soothing colors as these create a feeling of warmth and are in natural harmony with our body vibrations. An all white or black bathroom can be cold and draining. These color energies make you feel uncomfortable and will not encourage you to linger in the bathroom. Use natural materials like wood and plants to create a restful and relaxing space. Lights should be soft, and light bulbs have a yellow or peachy tint. Avoid fluorescent fittings above a mirror as this light makes the skin look gray and unhealthy. The flickering of strip lights sets up disturbing vibrations which can make us ill. Your aim should be to create a truly relaxing bathroom.
