Your eyes are highly complex and magnificent organs, capable of transmitting vast quantities of information to the brain in split seconds. But they are also quite delicate instruments, and to preserve their wonderful qualities they need a certain amount of care and attention.
The quality of light around you is important, especially when you are involved in close or finicky work. Good clear north light is the best, but if that’s not possible, make sure you buy a good lamp with a bright clear bulb. Put it behind your left shoulder if you are right- handed, so that the light falls on your work. Very often people talk about your eyes being tired, or needing a rest. But the eye is basically a muscle, and if it is healthy, then it isn’t your eyes that are tired, it’s your brain. Take a break from whatever you are doing, go for a walk, work on something else for a while, or even have a catnap. You’ll get up feeling refreshed and ready to begin again.
If you are feeling tired, and you have to go out for the evening, lie down with your eyes covered for five or ten minutes. Cotton pads moistened with cool water or witch hazel over your closed lids will help your whole face to feel refreshed, too.
Check your eyes regularly — as we get older, many conditions change. Children particularly may be suffering from some sort of defect which is easily correctable with the right glasses. Contact lenses are a useful aid for men and women who find themselves uncomfortable in ordinary glasses. The new lenses are much more comfortable these days and they are easy to handle.
When you order glasses, don’t forget to ask for sunglasses as well if you think you are going to need them. But don’t get in the habit of thinking they are a fashion accessory like a handbag or a necklace. They are very useful when the sun is glaring, on the beach during the height of summer, or when you are surrounded by snow. But walking around 365 days of the year in a brown or blue haze doesn’t do you or your eyes any good.
