Health Attention, don’t tear your Teeth apart
In theory your teeth should be the easiest parts of your body to keep strong and healthy — they are hard, resistant to damage, protected by the mouth, and most of us have been thoroughly brain-washed by toothpaste ads and dentist’s warnings. Yet in reality, teeth get an enormous amount of wear and tear, and they suffer more than the delicate eyes and ears which appear so vulnerable.
To begin with, we eat far too much concentrated sugars and sweeteners which stimulate bacteria to form in the mouth. These in turn combine with tiny particles of food to form a nasty substance called plaque, coating the surface of the teeth. Plaque attracts acids which start to eat their way into the enamel, wearing it away and gradually dissolving it. Without treatment, the bacteria then invade the dentine, or inner part of the tooth, and form a cavity. The pulp may become inflamed and painful, and if it goes unchecked, you may develop an abcess in the root. A sad story, and all too common. Cavities can be discouraged from forming in the first place in two ways; first, eat as little sugar and sugary products as possible, brush your teeth regularly after every meal and use special gum sticks to massage the gums between the teeth to remove any last remaining particles of food, and keep the circulation going so that the teeth remain strongly rooted in the gum, and the gum itself stays healthy.
Brushing your Teeth
Use your toothbrush at least twice a day, using a short tough bristle that won’t damage or scratch the enamel. Brush repeatedly in one direction only, up and down, on the inside and outside surfaces.
Then brush across the tops of the flat molars. Use dental floss or gum massage sticks to remove all particles and throw them away immediately after use. Never use toothpicks with sharp points — they can pierce the delicate gum and cause infection.
