Beauty and Hair
Washing you hair is not so much for health as for appearance; six times a year would keep it healthy but probably looking awful. So it really depends on how it is worn, and what you see in the mirror. Try washing it every 6 to 10 days. If it is oily you will need to wash more often, if dry, less. But be careful, the stimulation of the washing action itself can spur the oil glands in the follicles to produce yet more sebum making the condition worse. With oily hair always rinse with cool water and don’t use a highly alkaline detergent shampoo. Harsh shampoos can strip the oils off your hair completely and encourage the sebaceous glands to produce even more. If your hair is dry, always use a conditioner. There are many things you’ll find in the kitchen that can be put to use for hair health and beauty. Try some of these:
To gently brighten and lighten blonde hair: Boil a cup of dried camomile flowers in a pint of water for 15 minutes. Strain and pour through hair as a final rinse every time you wash.
To add shimmer:
Boil a bunch of fresh parsley in a pint of water for 15 minutes and pour through hair as a final rinse.
To give deep lustre to dark hair:
Steep 3 tablespoons of rosemary in a pint of water for 15 minutes and use as a final rinse.
To restore health to dry, brittle hair:
Beat two eggs together with 2 tbls. each of olive oil and honey 1 tble. of cidar vinegar. Shampoo as usual, rinse then apply all-honey massaging, well into hair and scalp. Cover with a towel, wait for 15 minutes, shampoo and rinse.
DANDRUFF
This annoying problem comes in two forms, dry and scaly, flaking off easily onto shoulders, or thick greasy scales that stick to the scalp. In both cases the cause is unknown. Medicated shampoos can help to get rid of scales and discourage their reappearance; the strongest contain zinc pyrothionate. But they can be very harsh on skin and scalp if used often. Sometimes washing your hair every two or three days in a one per cent solution of cetrimide, an antiseptic detergent, will do the trick.
Brush it daily to remove dust, dirt, waste and dead cells from scalp and to stimulate a good blood supply to the scalp. Always use a good comb, preferably one that is saw cut and made of bone, ivory or vulcanised rubber. Keep combs and brushes immaculate to prevent infection.
Have your hair cut or trimmed regularly. Although cutting will not make hair grow any faster it will make it look thicker and healthier.
Massage can help a head of hair to look better, grow faster, and feel better too. It increases blood flow to the scalp. Place your fingers deep into the hair and move your scalp in a circular motion firmly, leaving the fingers in one place, never sliding them over the surface of the scalp. Then change the position and do the same thing again until the whole scalp area has been covered.
If you bleach, dye or perm your hair, seek professional advice first. Some of the worst damage done to hair is by improper treatment in these areas.
