Even though a new home may be very appealing to us, its feng shui may hold a very different scenario. This can be illustrated by the great writer Rudyard Kipling who lived at Rock House on the East Devon coast at the turn of the last century. He describes the house as ‘being almost too good to be true … with big rooms each and all open to the sun‘ Although this house at first appeared to be the perfect home it had a depressing effect on Rudyard. He writes, ‘a gathering blandness of mind and sorrow of heart — caused by the Feng-Shui — the spirit of the house itself — a spirit of deep, deep despondency’
A house can therefore be lucky or unlucky, so when choosing a place to live or when looki
ng at your present home you need to assess the flow of ch‘i through the building. This will help you decide whether the place is lucky or whether you need to correct the bad influences. To do this you need first to look at the site in relation to other buildings and features of the land and environment.
Ch‘i energy consists of both yin and yang forces. These are the two opposite and complementary forces in the Universe. Yin is the feminine force, while yang is masculine. They need to be in balance for harmony to reign and the best site for a house is where there is the most ch‘i, a balanced meeting point of yin and yang energy.
Mountains and other raised features in the land are yang in nature and are thought to symbolize protective dragons. Rivers and streams are their veins through which passes the ch‘i, or ‘dragon’s breath’. ,The shapes of the landscape reveal what type of dragon energy is present. A mountain which is shaped like an armchair is ruled by the protective Mountain dragon. A hill to the east of the mountain is ruled by the Green dragon while the White tiger rules a western hill. These two great creatures are like guards and must coordinate with one another.
Water, on the other hand, is very yin and ruled by the Water dragon. Water symbolizes wealth and the position of your house in relation to water will be of utmost importance.
The most auspicious place for a house is halfway up a hillside, facing south, with the higher mountain to the rear. To the west should be a small hill and to the east a slightly higher hill. The front of the house should have an open and commanding view over a smaller foothill. Clean, gently moving, water in the form of a pond, lake or river should run in front of the house.
You can apply this principle to an urban situation. Taller buildings or trees should be at the back as they will form a protective guard for your house. It is best to have a building of similar size to the left and a slightly taller one on the right.
