Balancing Energy at Home
Good health, which is the basis of a long and happy life, is a state of energy balance. Energy in its undifferentiated state or potential is known by the Chinese as Tao. Tao is manifest in all things through the dynamic interaction of the two polar energy forces, yin and yang. There is no absolute yin or yang, just as there is no absolute light or darkness. Each exists relative to the other and are found in varying proportions in all things. This dynamic force of energy constantly circulates within us and is a necessary condition of life.
There are also five basic types of energy that are found in varying proportions in all substances and phenomena. These are fire, water, earth, metal and wood. Fire is the most yang, while water is the most yin. The elements are identified with a specific body organ, color, planet, season and compass direction. Each element can either be creative or destructive, and each one of the five elements either feeds or destroys another.
In the creative cycle, fire creates earth as the ashes created by the fire return to the earth. The earth creates metal which is formed within it. Metal creates water through a process of condensation and water creates wood by nourishing plant and tree life, and finally wood fuels fire.
In the destructive cycle, fire destroys metal, metal destroys wood, wood destroys earth, earth destroys water and water destroys fire.
To maintain a balance of energy in your home, the five elements should work in harmony. When all these elements are present and working together, they will promote a happy, healthy home. Check that you have all elements present in your home. If you have too much of one element and not enough of another this can lead to inharmonious vibrations, so make sure you have similar proportions of each element or their related color. If you are lacking in any one element, add an appropriate object or its related color. For example, if you have no water element in your living room, you could add a blue or black object instead, while a bathroom with no fire element would benefit from some red or orange candles.
