Face Lift Scars

You will have a scar right round each ear. The scar behind your ear and its continuation across part of the scalp will be hidden by hair (except in the case of a man who becomes totally bald). The scar in front of the ear will be visible but usually it is faint and doesn’t shriek its presence. However, scars can widen and drop unpredictably and sometimes a hairstyle which covered them at first ceases to cover them later. If an incision is made under your chin to remove neck fat, a small scar will show here.

Face Lift Problems

Men may be put off the idea of a face lift by the risk that scars will show clearly if their hair thins dramatically or they lose it altogether. They must also be prepared to have to shave around the ears, as it is the normally bearded skin that is pulled up taut to this point.

Men also have a higher risk of bleeding into facial tissues occurring, forming clots which, if minor, can be treated without additional surgery but, if major, may require another general anaesthetic and corrective measures. The result in either case may be a thickening of the skin in the affected area.

The delicate area behind the ear is often slow to heal. It may be sore and open, then crust over and form a scab and sometimes the new skin beneath will remain a different colour for quite a long time, or permanently. Infrequently, the sore area and scabbing may extend further down the face. Smokers are at much higher risk of these complications, as their blood circulation is poorer and healing is compromised.

If, because of poor healing, skin sloughs off from the scalp area, along the incision line, there will be no hair in this area for about six months, as that is how long it takes the hair follicle in the new skin to be activated. You may also lose some hair from the temples and it may be a year before full thickness is restored.

A very worrying risk is nerve damage to the face. Because the network of nerves serving the face is so intricate, it is not always possible, even with the greatest preparation and care, to avoid temporary or permanent injury. Sometimes the facial skin may feel numb or tingly for up to a year. If the nerve around the lower lip is damaged or bruised on one side, you may have a lopsided appearance when you talk or smile and this can take up to two years to resolve itself. In a few cases permanent damage can be done to the nerves affecting the lower part of the ear, leaving this area totally numb.

These risks are relatively rare when a face lift is carried out by a competent and experienced surgeon. However, they are common if carried out by an unskilled practitioner and can be worse even than described here. As it is our faces that we show to the world and we cannot easily hide them, it is absolutely vital to be sure that your surgeon knows what he or she is doing. Many of the disasters caused by inexpertly performed face lifts cannot be corrected even by a better surgeon.

If you are happy with your face lift and suffer no side effects or complications that you cannot easily live with, you will have any psychological benefits that a more youthful appearance may bring you for as long as your face lift lasts. But don’t expect miracles. The procedure has only temporary effects and will need revision within seven to ten years.
