Besides wrinkles, which come to us all, many people may have their faces marred by rough scars, of diverse origin, or permanently marked as a result of acne or chickenpox. There are three treatments which may correct some or all of these problems, depending upon their extent. They are — chemical face peel, dermabrasion, and collagen implants.

Wrinkles and Facial Scars Cosmetic Surgery procedures

A chemical face peel can smooth your skin by removing rough outer layers and fine wrinkles and can, at the same time, remove any brown patches that have appeared on the skin as it ages. It cannot make deep creases or folds in your skin disappear, as it is a superficial technique only and doesn’t reach into the deeper layers of the skin.

Dermabrasion is a means of ’sandpapering’ the skin so that unsightly scars blend in better. It cannot remove scars, nor can it help at all in the case of pitted acne scars which extend into deeper layers of the skin because, again, it is a superficial technique only.

Collagen implants can fill in depressions in the skin, such as those caused by superficial acne and chickenpox scars and by wrinkles. But, again, they cannot help deep- pitted acne scars because the depressions extend too far beneath the skin for the implant injections to reach. While the implants can eliminate large wrinkles, for a while, they cannot get rid of scars altogether, simply make them less noticeable.

Wrinkles and Facial Scars Cosmetic Surgery, for whom is it appropriate?

All three procedures can be done at any age, although healing is slower if you are older rather than younger.

All three procedures are most successful when done on pale skin. Those with dark or sallow skin are at great risk of patchy skin discolouration and should be discouraged from having dermabrasion or a chemical face peel.

Dermabrasion or collagen implants for scars should not be considered until about a year after the injury has healed or the infection that caused the scars has cleared.

If you love to lie in the sun, these procedures may not be appropriate for you. You must always protect your face fully from the sun if you have a chemical face peel or dermabrasion and take care to use a high protection factor sunscreen after collagen implants.

Collagen implants are not the answer if you are looking for a one-off permanent solution to your problem. They must be repeated regularly and are not very effective if your skin is sun-damaged. Some people are allergic to collagen, even though the type used is similar to the type produced by our own skins. Dermabrasion does have permanent effects but chemical face peels may have to be repeated once or twice at yearly intervals.
