In the course of ageing, we all develop frown lines and furrows on the forehead but for some of us they are more prominent than for others, depending on the kind of skin we have, how much we frown and, also, inherited conditions which can make these lines appear relatively earlier in life.

Most people who consider cosmetic surgery because of an unacceptable, to them, degree of ageing of the face are disappointed to find that a face lift, which sounds so all- encompassing, does not touch these lines at all. Face lift surgery concentrates on the lower face and neck only.

If you have furrows on the brow as well as wrinkly and sagging skin on the lower face, you may need to have a brow lift as well as a face lift. The two can quite easily be done at the same time.

If, on the other hand, frown lines or furrows on the forehead are your main concern, you do not need a face lift at all. This is a plus because a brow lift is a shorter and less complicated operation.

A brow lift can smooth out furrows in the forehead and make frown lines softer and, in the process, lifts your eyebrows and upper eyelids. It can make both horizontal and vertical crease lines significantly less prominent but it cannot remove them entirely.

Brow Lift Cosmetic Surgery, for whom is it appropriate?

There are no age restrictions on this operation but it is unusual for anyone to seek it before the age of about 45, as forehead lines don’t tend to be especially noticeable before then.

A few people do, however, inherit a condition from their parents which results in a very furrowed forehead at a younger age. This is not a sign of ageing but, of course, may be all the more noticeable and perhaps embarrassing for that reason. In such circumstances, brow lifts can be done at a far earlier than usual age, for instance in the 20s and 30s.

Women are suitable candidates for brow lifts, men are not. This is because the not insignificant scar can be hidden by women’s hair, whereas men would be left with a very exposed scar when their hair recedes. They are better served, though perhaps less satisfactorily in their view, by an eyebrow lift and even this leaves visible scarring.

If you are thinking of having cosmetic surgery on your upper eyelids as well, you should have the brow lift done first. A brow lift inevitably pulls up the eyelids as well and, if the skin of your upper eyelids has already been tightened, you may not be able to close your eyes fully afterwards. You may also be left with a slightly disconcerting stare.

Brow Lift Cosmetic Surgery, what needs to be done?

Brow lifts take about an hour and a half (but less if carried out as part of a face lift operation) and can be performed under local anaesthetic, if preferred. An incision is made right across your scalp, just above the hairline, from behind one ear to behind the other. Skin and muscle is peeled down from the scalp incision to the eyebrows and strips of the muscles which form the frown lines are removed. (This is done to ensure that deep frown lines cannot return but will not prevent you from moving your forehead.) The skin is then pulled back up again and the excess is trimmed off, so that the skin can be positioned tightly and stitched back.

(In the case of an eyebrow lift for men, an incision is made across the top of the eyebrow, the eyebrows are pulled up to the forehead skin and the excess is removed.)
