Infection is not common but it is vital to call a doctor at the very first signs — increased rather than decreased reddening, swelling and aching of the ear after the first few days — because infection that is not treated quickly can lead to permanent damage to the cartilage of the ear and a misshapen appearance possibly worse than the one that has been corrected. Infection is a higher risk if the ear has been seriously injured prior to surgery.

Another cause of undue swelling may be a collection of blood under the surface which has not dispersed. This can easily be drained off by the surgeon.

A sore may develop in the shell-like area of the ear where the cartilage has been reshaped. This is usually due to pressure from the dressings when sleeping and responds quickly to the healing properties of open air, once the dressings and bandages have been removed.

The ear may be numb for a few months sometimes and extreme sensitivity to heat, cold and touch can persist for up to a year. In the sun, the ears may burn easily unless protected. Scarves or hats are advisable, for comfort, in cold weather until the sensitivity lessens.

An unfortunate problem which is not uncommon is that the stitches may not hold one or both ears in position firmly enough and gradually the ears will start to stick out as previously. This is more likely to happen if the ears have been accidentally pulled or dragged on while healing, tearing the stitches. Of course this is disappointing when it happens and a complete new operation will be necessary, after about six months when the ear is stronger.

Sometimes, despite care, the ears will look asymmetrical and correction will be necessary. If bleeding occurs on the second or third day after the operation, this may also necessitate repositioning of the ears.

Advantages of Ear Cosmetic Surgery

The effects of treatment are permanent and serious complications are relatively few. Most children who were upset by the appearance of their ears are very happy to have had the procedure done, despite the temporary discomfort during the recovery period. Inability to play competitive sports for a while is rarely a major concern for children who have been mercilessly teased and who may have tended to withdraw, out of self-consciousness, from team activities anyway.
