Baggy Eyelids Removal Pain and Recovery

You can go home the same day, with two small strips of bandage over your stitches to protect them. These can be removed a few days later, when your stitches come out. Your eyelids will ache initially but the pain should not be severe. If it is, call a doctor, as there may be internal bleeding.

Your eyelids will stay swollen and bruised for up to a week. If you have particularly delicate eyelid skin, the bruising may last much longer. Cold packs, placed over the eyes, will help reduce both swelling and bruising faster. Dark glasses, obviously, will help disguise the remaining effects but you will not be able to wear contact lenses for maybe a week or ten days. Your eyes will be especially sensitive to light, dust, wind and smoky atmospheres for maybe up to a month and you are likely to find yourself weeping rather a lot.

For the few first days, you will probably wake up in the morning with your eyes feeling unpleasantly sticky. This is because, until your eyelids are healed, there is nowhere for tears to drain away to while you are lying down. Gentle cleaning around your eyes once you are up will get rid of the stickiness. Women must not apply eye make-up for at least a week.

You will probably feel comfortable enough about your appearance to return to work or normal daily or social activities after about a week. Gentle exercise is all right, but avoid physically demanding sports for two weeks or more. Ball games and competitive contact sports should be avoided for several weeks. Sex should be avoided for about two weeks, to reduce risk of any accidental knock to your eyes.

Baggy Eyelids Removal Scars

Although it might be feared by the lay person that the delicate skin of the eyelids will scar badly, in fact, the resultant scar is usually very fine indeed (bar complications). The scar from upper eyelid surgery is hidden by the upper crease of the eyelid and the scar on the lower lid is almost entirely hidden by the lower crease. Both may extend out slightly beyond the corner of the eye, where they are normally indistinguishable from the normal laughter crease lines.

Problems with the upper eyelid are relatively rare. There may be numbness for a while and you may develop tiny white spots on the eyelids but these will disappear quite quickly. If you get a bang to your eyelid during the healing stage, the effects could be more problematic long term, however. Your scar may thicken and become slightly more visible than you bargained for, so it really makes sense to take extra good care of your eyes for the first couple of months.

If the operation is not done well, there is a chance that the eyelids won’t close fully when you are asleep and this will mean that you end up with dry sore eyes.

The most alarming complication is the discovery that your eyelids look different from each other, because slightly more tissue has been removed from one and not from the other. This can usually be corrected. More worrying is when you look rather sunken-eyed because considerably too much fat has been removed from both eyes. This cannot be corrected well but judicious use of make-up may camouflage the worst effects.

Occasionally, if a nerve that controls the eye is damaged, vision may temporarily be affected. This can occur, though rarely, after surgery of either the upper or lower lid.

As mentioned above, surgery of the lower lid is the far more risky and the complications are correspondingly greater. The very worst, fortunately extremely rare, is blindness.

Much more common, but fortunately not frequent, is a dragging down bloodhound effect on the lower eyelid. In this case, the white of the eye may be exposed, which isn’t very pretty. Sometimes, however, the eyelid turns almost completely outwards, exposing the red inner lining. This occurs when too much skin has been removed but it may correct itself in time, when the skin of the eyelid regains some of its old stretchiness. If not, a skin graft may be the only option available, in which case increased scarring is inevitable.

Upper eyelid surgery is usually without serious complications, the effects are often dramatically good, beyond expectation, and they last for about ten years.

Lower eyelid surgery is also dramatically effective and longlasting, when complications do not occur. Bags below the eyes do not normally return at all. However, it is very important to be aware of the risks and to ensure that you see a surgeon who is experienced and skilled at this particular kind of surgery. Serious asymmetry of the eyes, where one is pulled down significantly lower than the other, may not be remediable at all.
