Finally, anything that you apply to your skin may cause so-called acne cosmetics or pomade acne. If your skin feels irritated by any particular cleanser, makeup, sunscreen, moisturizer, or even shampoo, and especially by hair treatments, it reacts by forming an extra shell of protection. How does it do this? Simply by adhering more dead cells onto the surface! It is therefore not the cosmetic per se that causes acne, but rather the body’s protective reaction that clogs the pores.
The most frequent cause of children getting pimples around the mouth (perioral acne) is from bubble gum or from brushing their teeth (and the skin around their mouths!) with a fluoride toothpaste. Adults can also get fluoride acne around their mouths, often more prominently on the side on which they sleep. If you or your children have this problem, use a non-fluoride toothpaste in the evening before sleeping, and wash your face immediately after brushing.
You can even get acne from the clothes you wear. Men especially are prone to getting acne on their neck, often because their aftershave is concentrated under their collar. Wool and synthetic fabric turtlenecks can cause friction and irritation as well as increased perspiration, all exacerbating a tendency for acne.
Athletes who wear headbands or hats with bands can get headband acne across their forehead, and hikers can get backpack acne from sweating under their backpacks. Just changing your habits can improve your skin!
You should be particularly aware of not touching your face, especially if you have to handle prints, cleaning agents, or chemicals or even just newspapers and copy machine paper, both of which are coated with formaldehyde. Recurrent touching places the irritant onto your face, often causing either rashes or acne.
Finally, although the sun tends to dry the skin’s surface and often seems to improve the complexion (although you now know otherwise), the sun itself stimulates sebum secretion and makes acne worse, even weeks after exposure. If you get pustules when you first go into the sun early in the summer, it may be your suntan oil (which you should never use, since it accelerates the sun damage to your skin) or your sunscreen. If you tend to develop pustules a few weeks after sun exposure, it may be because the sun has actually changed the skin lining your follicles, causing so-called Mallorcaor actinic acne.
