Make-up Polish, Colour Cosmetics, Fragrance and Perfumed Outlook (step1,2)
When relaxing at home, at weekends or on holiday, it’s great to give the skin and yourself a break from wearing make-up. But otherwise, all women look and feel better with a little colour, ‘their’ colours, to enhance their skintone, eyes and hair.
If you hate the idea of wearing foundation, or feel too obvious’ in any makeup at all, you’re probably using the wrong products as well as the wrong shades. Cosmetics today are light and easy to apply, with good quality products to be found in every price range. And they are much more natural looking than they used to be.
In corporate image seminars I show women how to achieve an effective, natural, professional make-up in just 10 minutes each day. If you follow the seven steps given below, you’ll only need to touch up your powder and lipstick to look fresh for eight hours or more!
Need I add that you should always start with a scrupulously clean face — and a light moisturiser if you have dry skin. Seat yourself in front of a well-lit mirror—daylight is better than artificial light.
Step 1: Concealer
Many of us have shadows on our faces which make us look tired and drawn, even if we’ve had a good night’s sleep. Shading comes with age (starting in the late twenties) and can appear around the eyes because of vitamin deficiencies, general neglect or a stressful lifestyle. In some cases it can be hereditary.
Take a look at where there are dark patches, areas or lines on your face. We’ll begin by lightening these to blend in with the rest of your skintone.
- To use as a concealer, choose a foundation lighter than your skintone, and dot on lightly in those shaded areas. Allow the foundation to ’settle’ for a minute, then begin blending it in — gently — using your ring finger (this is the finger that has the most delicate touch).
- For darker circles and shadows use a thicker foundation or concealer in an even lighter shade, and cover the area completely. Apply with a soft, natural bristle brush, a foam applicator or your ring finger.
Step 2: Foundation
Don’t be tempted to skip foundation; without this base the rest of your make-up won’t last more than one hour. Also, foundation helps to even the tone and texture of your skin. Just as an artist prepares her canvas before painting, using a neutral ‘wash’ for a base on which to be creative with colour, so must you provide a smooth, receptive base for your make-up.
- Choose a colour by testing shades along the jawline. You want one that blends in, rather than being distinctive.
- The best way to apply foundation is with a foam sponge. Put a small amount on the back of your hand, take up a little of this at a time on to the sponge and apply evenly, in downward strokes, all over your face and lips but not your eyelids. Take particular care to blend in well along the jawline as you do not want an obvious line, but do not take the foundation down and over your neck.
