Fat Suction Scars

You will have as many scars as you had incisions but none should be longer than half an inch. If your buttocks and thighs have been treated, most of the scars should be hidden by the buttock crease. Scars behind the knee, on the ankle or on the stomach will show and some can turn out to look red and thick.

Fat Suction Problems

Infection and bleeding under the skin are rare but need instant attention. A very serious but again rare possibility is that, during suctioning, some fat may escape into the bloodstream and cause an embolism (obstruction of an artery). There has been one recorded instance of this being fatal.

Far less seriously and more commonly, you may suffer some numbness in the treated area for up to six months, because of temporary nerve damage.

If you are unlucky, some skin may slough off from around your scars, making your final scars wider and more unsightly.

More common, however, are cosmetic results which are not quite as good as hoped. Very often you may end up with an indent or wavy look (and feel) to the outline of your buttocks and thighs, where the fat has been removed. This may be upsetting in your love life or if you had hoped to wear tight clothing or to look smoothly trim in your swimsuit, but you may consider it preferable to the original fat.

You may find that not as much fat has disappeared as you and your surgeon planned (complete accuracy is difficult because of the swelling that ensues immediately after suction starts) but a little extra suctioning can be done later, if you choose.

A last problem is false expectations for the future. Fat cells are laid down at birth and once they are removed no more are manufactured. This is all to the good, of course, but not as good as it may seem. Only a small number of fat cells will have been removed by fat suction and the rest can swell out quite sufficiently to ensure renewed plumpness if you now proceed to overeat. The new fat may deposit itself in areas, such as your arms or face, where previously fat wasn’t a problem. It will, however, be the kind of fat that you can diet away but just don’t be lulled into the false belief that, after fat suction, you can never get fat again.

Fat Suction Advantages

Fat removal in the areas treated will be permanent. For contouring of the buttocks and thighs, fat suction is clearly preferable to surgery, as the scars are so much more discreet. However, as pointed out at the start, fat suction can only successfully be carried out in a small proportion of people.
