How to Eliminate Wrinkles
Some wrinkles are superficial; some can be deeper. The good news is that, as a scientist and a dermatologist, I can assure you that almost all wrinkles can be either prevented, or at least successfully treated!
How do you make your skin, and therefore yourself, look better and younger without expending a great deal of time and effort? Of course you can prevent new wrinkles from forming, starting today! But once wrinkles are in place, you can add to your health regime successively, as needed, one of three methods to eliminate them — the “three R’s” — Resurfacing, Recontouring and Redraping. The result will be a fresher, happier, more youthful-looking you.
Wrinkles Prevention
The first and the easiest skincare step you can take is the prevention of wrinkles.
- Protect your skin from the sun.
- Eliminate unnecessary facial expressions.
- Sleep in a position that does not engrave wrinkles on your face.
- Stop smoking.
Incorporate these simple and effective preventive habits into your daily life, starting now.
But how can we change the past? Nearly everyone has been exposed to the sun. Many of us used to smoke. And we all experience (to varying degrees depending on our genetics and our state of health) natural, biologic aging and later the inevitable tug of gravity. We therefore need to to be aware of the next three stages of care. To effectively treat and maintain our skin and to eliminate the wrinkles we already have, we can add each of these three R’s to our health regime, successively in life as we require them.
Wrinkles Resurfacing
Resurfacing affects the texture of skin and eliminates the tiny surface wrinkles. Most of these small wrinkles can be treated at home quite easily and effectively.
By learning proper methods of skin cleansing and exfoliating, you can rejuvenate your appearance each day. Wrinkles from previous sun exposure or smoking can be corrected under the care of a dermatologist with creams, such as products with alpha-hydroxy acids or retinoic acid (Retin A).
Some people require more skin resurfacing than can be accomplished at home. People in this position would benefit enormously from medical treatments performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon, such as soft tissue implants, chemical peels, dermabrasion, or laser resurfacing.
Wrinkles Recontouring
Recontouring eliminates the deep wrinkles of facial expression such as horizontal forehead wrinkles, the crease between the eyebrows (from furrowing the brow), the little lines above and below the lips and around the eyes, as well as the deep, vertical creases above and below the mouth. Recontouring can only be accomplished with medical treatments by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon.
Wrinkles Redraping
Redraping eliminates the surplus, sagging skin of baggy eyes or jowls. Redraping can be accomplished by a variety of effective surgical methods such as an eye tuck (or blephoplasty), liposuction of the chin, a forehead lift or a full face-lift, all of which are performed by a plastic surgeon.
