Free Radicals and Wrinkles
Everyone is talking about “free radicals“, the very reactive molecules that form from exposure either to the sun or to certain cancer-causing agents in the environment. Excessive free radicals damage connective tissue, cell membranes, and the basic genetic building block DNA itself. On the skin free-radical damage causes premature aging and skin cancer.
Because the most common free radicals are made of “reactive oxygen species”, the body has evolved an “anti-oxidant defense system” using its own enzymes (often with the help of certain trace minerals) and vitamins drawn from the diet. Being the organ most exposed to the environment, the skin is especially vulnerable to free-radical damage so recent research has concentrated on developing protective skin-cream formulations. Indeed highly effective anti-aging creams containing essential free-radical quenchers such as selenium and the natural form of vitamin E have been formulated and will soon be available.
L-selenomethionine
Selenium is a trace mineral essential to human life It has long been known that selenium acts with an anti-oxidant enzyme to quench (or supress) “free radicals“.
The natural distribution of selenium throughout the world is uneven. Selenium-rich soils are thought to result from ancient volcanic eruptions with the subsequent leeching to ancient inland seas, long since evaporated. In certain areas, glacial run-off from the Ice Age and wind and rain over the centuries may have washed selenium from the soil into the sea, resulting in a deficiency of this mineral in locally grown plants and animal feed.
Certain areas of the southeast United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Canada, Switzerland, and the Scandinavian countries have quite low levels of selenium. Some areas (such as South Dakota and parts of China) have such high levels that ruminant animals such as cattle can actually develop metabolic toxicity.
Selenium and health
There is an interesting, important link between selenium and health. In countries where the population consumes more selenium, there are measurably fewer cancers of all types (pulmonary, colon, breast, and prostate, as well as skin), and in those countries where the population consumes less selenium, there are more cancers. Why is selenium important to our skin? A retrospective study demonstrates that patients whose blood level of selenium is in the lowest 10 percent have 4.4 times the incidence of skin cancer than those in the highest 10 percent. Skin cancers are especially affected by selenium.
The topical cream — a hope for the future
This startling fact led to my own studies, carried out over a number of years, on the possible benefits to our skin of a cream containing Lselenemethionine (which has selenium attached to the natural essential amino acid L-methionine). L-selenemethionine proved to be an excellent compound to deliver selenium effectively to the deep layers of the skin. Using such a cream regularly (or, to an extent, taking selenium orally) not only protects the skin from sunburn (although not as well as a high-SPF sunscreen), but also, in the laboratory, delays the onset and decreases the incidence of skin cancer.
Furthermore, when applied regularly to sun- damaged skin, L-selenemethionine cream reverses all of the effects of photoaging better and faster than retinoic acid. Wrinkles decrease and the skin becomes smoother. Under the microscope, the damaged, thickened, outer layer of skin becomes thinner, the clumped elastic tissue is repaired, and there is regeneration of collagen. The still more exciting finding is that this is accomplished without the irritating side- effects of dry flakiness, redness, itching, and increased sensitivity to the sun and to cosmetics.
In fact, L-selenemethionine actually protects the skin from sunburn and decreases skin irritations.
L-selenemethionine cream is not yet available commercially, but it is one of several new preparations that will soon be added to our armament against wrinkles.
