Support Cleansing with the Power of Your Mind
Your mind is a wonderful ally in your cleansing program. Although you cannot see your thoughts, they have powerful effects on your health and well-being. Think of your thoughts as mental nourishment. Just as you choose with care the foods that you eat, begin to choose your thoughts with the same care. Realize that your thoughts do not choose you—you choose your thoughts. The first step in cultivating healthier thinking patterns is to become aware of the habitual thought patterns that you have. We all have mental tapes that run continuously through the subconcious mind. By becoming aware of your habitual thoughts, you can begin to replace the negative, self-defeating thoughts that you have with more positive, life-affirming thoughts. Journal writing, relaxation exercises, and meditation and visualization are powerful techniques for quieting the mind and cultivating healthier ways of thinking.
Journal Writing for Emotional Detoxification
Many times, people know that they are anxious, depressed, or unhappy, but are unable to identify the cause of their unhappiness or are uncertain of how to make changes that will result in a more satisfying life. Unexpressed or unacknowledged feelings are almost always at the root of painful emotional blocks. Journal writing is a simple, and yet extremely powerful tool for emotional detoxification and for cultivating self-understanding.
Even if you are not feeling emotionally stuck, journal writing is a wonderful tool for accessing your inner wisdom. Several years ago I adopted the practice of journal writing first thing upon arising in the morning. In the quiet of the early morning hours as the sun is rising, I sit and write a couple of pages in longhand, allowing whatever thoughts are flowing through my mind to flow through my hand and onto the paper. During this time, I am somewhere between the dream state I have just left and the dawning of the new day. Journal writing has become a form of meditation and processing that has resulted in significant changes in my emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Studies have shown that people who engage in journal writing on a regular basis enhance the functioning of their immune systems and are less prone to illness. I think of this type of journal writing as a method of purification. It is a practice that I have woven into my daily life that enhances my sense of wellbeing and prevents the build-up of toxic emotions.
While you don’t have to adhere to a schedule to benefit from journal writing, it does help to set aside a regular time. Some people enjoy writing in the early morning hours, while others like to journal just before sleeping in order to process the day’s events. Don’t worry about grammar or punctuation—you’ll more readily access feelings if you bypass the intellect. Don’t try to write anything of importance, but instead allow the free flow of any thoughts or images that appear in your mind to be transferred to paper by your hand. It may take a few writing sessions to completely relax, but you’ll soon discover the joys of the unique insights into the inner workings of your mind that appear when you allow your thoughts to flow freely onto the paper. As you continue in your process of journal writing, you will strengthen your connection to your inner wisdom, which will help to guide you toward a healthy, fulfilling, and joyful life.
