Hints for Happy and Pleasant Living, Warm and Happiness
Every living thing seems to have some enemy. Wherever we look, we see the evidences of conflict in one form or another. Human life is no exception. Some of our enemies come out into the open where we can see and watch their movements, but others are far too small for the eye to see. What is worse, they are many times more numerous and far more dangerous. Most of them have the power to multiply within the human body in enormous numbers. These are the enemies we call germs. Some of them may cause serious diseases that could have been prevented with a little care.
A Clean Home
Germs are found everywhere, even in the cleanest of homes. However, they are more likely to be present where rubbish and filth are left lying around. The droppings of animals are a common source of germs that may find their way into homes. Flies and other insects may also carry germs in large numbers into your home. It is wise to keep these pests out of your house by using wire screens over your doors and windows. Screens should be fine enough to stop mosquitoes as well, especially in areas where malaria and similar diseases are prevalent.
Cats, dogs, and other family pets may also carry germs into your home, especially if the animals are sick. But when the animal is well, there is usually little danger. Rats and mice are far more dangerous carriers of disease, particularly during some epidemic. Rats breed more rapidly around large quantities of food or rubbish. Most of them are never seen because they remain hidden during the daylight hours as much as possible. It has been estimated that for every rat you see around your home there are hundreds more you never see.
In ridding your home of these pests it is wise to keep the premises clean at all times, for a well- ordered home is less likely to be overrun with rats and mice. An energetic cat also will help to keep them away. Frequent use of soap and water on floors, walls, and around sinks and stoves will discourage vermin. Such simple steps will help to prevent disease and provide a place that is sweet and clean at all times. Under these conditions any home will become a more enjoyable place in which to live.
A Restful Home
One of the charming aspects about a good home is that it provides a place of peace and rest and relaxation for all the family. It will be one spot in which everyone can relax after the toil of a hard day. Such a home naturally will have quiet, well-chosen furnishings. The colors on the walls and floors will be soft and subdued, blending well with the rest of the home. It is surprising how such things affect our entire mental outlook. If there is a pleasant view from the windows, this also will contribute to the happiness of the family. Keep this in mind when buying a home.
People who are loud and noisy in their tastes will be likely to choose furnishings with harsh colors and inappropriate designs, but those who want a restful place in which to live are more apt to choose colors and designs that will lend an atmosphere of peace and quiet. Naturally there will be light and sunshine in such a home, though not glaring and blinding in its effects. It should be subdued and quiet, bringing comfort to those who are tired and in need of rest.
The music in such a home will not be wild and noisy, but relaxing and enjoyable. Good entertainment is highly desirable and of real benefit in the home; however, this does not mean that the radio must be blaring the latest wild tunes of the day. A certain amount of variety is good for everyone, and there are times when we should feel bright and cheerful. Yet there are other times when we should be subdued and quiet. Those who are tired need time for reflection and rest, allowing worn tissues and tightly stretched muscles to relax and regain their strength and vitality. The state of our emotions usually reflects the type of music we choose. For instance, disturbed music may indicate a rather disturbed mind.
Music is the language of the mind. It is also a great stimulant to the body. A vigorous marching song will make our feet want to move in time with the music, whereas a jazzy, syncopated tune may cause us to feel quite hilarious and perhaps slightly irresponsible. Soft music is likely to bring relief after a tiring day or a troubled night. In treating nervous patients it is well to choose the music very carefully. The right type of music may help them in making rapid recovery. The same care should be exercised in selecting music for children. The type of music you choose for your family will have a marked influence on the home in which you live.
Of equal importance is the question of sleep. No one can stay healthy unless he is assured of his full quota of sleep and rest. Some may need more sleep than others, but we all must have adequate rest. Quietness in the home is essential to restoring a tired mind and in preparing the body to face the responsibilities of living. Resting in a chair may be helpful during the hours of ordinary relaxation, but sleeping in a good, firm bed is the best tonic for worn nerves and aching muscles. This is particularly true when a person is worried over business affairs. Proper rest should help him to make wise decisions. The same is true of students before major examinations. Some students seem to think they can stay up all night by keeping themselves awake with coffee or some other stimulant and then do well in an examination. They would be wiser to make better preparation before the examination, and then go to sleep and have a good rest. They will then be free from worry over what may happen the next day.
When a person finds it difficult to go to sleep, it might be well to try a warm bath before going to bed. This will help relax the muscles and increase the circulation of the blood, thus carrying away impurities and bringing fresh oxygen to the tissues. A warm bath puts a healthy tone into the whole body. Another excellent idea is to read from some good book just before going to sleep. The thoughts should be spiritual and uplifting, drawing the mind nearer to the source of all that is good. Sometimes a little light exercise, such as a pleasant walk, or even some deep breathing may help the muscles to relax and relieve the tensions of the day.
