Mild Acne and Avoidable Acne relates to Cosmetics, Clothing, Perfume
Acne usually starts as a few blackheads on the nose and forehead and a few inflamed papules also appear often on a greasy skin. Often the spots come in crops so that there are times in between without any spots. Many girls have a bout of acne around the time of their period.
Cosmetics
Very greasy or oily cosmetics are best avoided because they can block up the follicles and make acne worse. This may happen under a fringe when the hair may prevent the grease escaping. Disagreement about the best advice partly stems from the fact that in America they used to have a lot of trouble with greasy make-up causing acne. In Britain most doctors are happy to allow the use of noncomedogenic foundation, moisturizers etc. Some people gain much confidence if they can hide their spots.
Strangely it seems that some people who are obsessional face-washers, washing about six times a day, can also develop acne.
Clothing
Tight clothes and hot ones will tend to initiate acne spots. Headbands may cause acne on the forehead. Oil- or grease-soaked jeans or boiler suits may also cause acne.
Simple things you can do
Don’t panic!
Many people regard the onset of a few acne spots as a disaster and they immediately foresee a spotty, scarred face staring back at them in the mirror. First it should be realized that most people’s acne does not progress even to being moderately bad. Secondly there is very good treatment available for all grades of acne.
Soap and water will get rid of the grease from your skin and more expensive methods are not necessary. If your skin is sensitive it may be more comfortable to use unperfumed soaps. Do not wash more often than usual. You should not let acne cramp your lifestyle but some people find their spots are irritable when they are in hot, cramped, smoke-filled discotheques. People who play a lot of sport are often the types who can laugh off their acne and not let it get them down. Sunlight helps many people with acne: this is partly due to the camouflaging effect of a tan but there may also be a genuine reduction in the number of papules and blackheads. Simple anti-acne medication is equally effective, so artificial sunlight is rarely recommended as a treatment.
Things which do not matter
For many years diet was blamed for acne. The notion that eating greasy food brought out the spots was common, and chocolate was considered the worst thing possible. Fortunately we now know chocolate to be innocent of this charge and in fact there is nothing to suggest that diet is involved.
Acne is definitely not infectious and should not interfere with physical contact with other people. It is not affected by too much or too little sexual activity.
