Stones that Heal, Magic Magnetic Mineral Protection, from Sky to earth, Precious Stones, the Essence of Stone, Stone is Alive
Precious stones, the essence of stone, are born of the mother rock after maturing in it. Stone is alive, in its fashion, with its very slow movement, from formation to wearing away.
Celestial activity is exercised on stone, a strong receptive substance. In Masonic symbolism, a cubical stone expresses the idea of stability, balance, and completion, and corresponds to the alchemical salt. A cubical stone surmounted by a point symbolizes the philosopher’s stone: The pyramid above the cube represents the spiritual principle resting on the base of salt and the ground.
In the past, meteorites fallen from the sky were regarded as instruments of fertility. Offerings were made to them during droughts or in the spring to assure a good harvest. The ancient Mexicans called them “rain gold” and believed they could cure all sorts of fevers. Upright stones, such as the Indian lingams and the Breton menhirs, symbolize fertility; with similar rites, sterile Indian and Breton women seek help from them.
These stones were worshiped from the time when they were quarried until they were made into statues. They were believed to have supernatural properties and magnetic virtues capable of healing. Hard stones with multiple angles and facets aroused curiosity and respect. They were made into amulets, fetishes, and talismans.
Precious stones are the result of a transmutation from the opaque to the translucid, from shadows to light. They act as charms and remedies.
Coral, mother-of-pearl, and amber are said to give protection against the evil eye. Coral, carnelian, and ruby are signs of rejoicing and prosperity; agate is a sign of respect and fortune, turquoise of victory and longevity, emerald and topaz of courage.
In primitive societies the jewel has always been a talisman. Necklaces of animal and human teeth, pierced flints, and seashells provide magic protection. Rings, clasps, earrings, and ankle rings have prophylactic properties.
In Arab traditions, stones have curative and talismanic values. They act by their presence and heal. Diamonds give protection from poison and drive away care; rubies heal wounds; sapphires help in making escapes;emeralds make one immune to venom; pearls prolong youth; galactite gives milk to nursing mothers and strengthens fruit trees.
The medical science of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, closely linked to magic and astrology, concerned itself with the virtues of stones. Famous physicians and earnest pharmacologists extolled the therapeutic power of stones, included them in subtle preparations, and stated that their wondrous properties were due to the influence of the heavenly bodies.
Stones of the sun are related to that heavenly body: The diamond wards off heart disease, the topaz prevents bad dreams. Stones of the moon impart its virtues to the opal and the pearl, whose milky whiteness seems to be a reflection of the moon. They cure disorders of the nerves and brain, and fevers. Stones of Mars, formed under its influence—ruby, garnet, red agate—are tonic stones which cure anemia and give protection from wounds. Stones of Venus, such as the emerald, protect women from diseases of the belly and kidneys, favor conception, and give long life. Stones of Mercury— onyx and jade—soothe the nerves and reduce fever. Stones of Jupiter—turquoise, sapphire, aquamarine—protect against baldness and liver diseases. Stones of Saturn—amethyst, black agate, jet—combat deafness and disorders of old age.
Later, science also concerned itself with stones. Cardan, a great sixteenth-century scientist, wrote, “No precious stone lacks virtue. They favor longevity. Some favor health, others wisdom, others wealth, others love, others divination, others bodily strength, and others good fortune. Still others have a bad influence: Some make people lazy, some make them timid. . .
Precious stones and pearls were used in various ways. They were ground to a powder which was swallowed either by itself or mixed with other powdered stones or substances such as gold and silver. These strange mixtures eventually came to be regarded as precious medicines, potions, and elixirs.
Knowledge of the mineral world has been almost totally lost in civilized societies: Even less is known about the virtues of stones than those of plants. Yet all the elements of creation can be consciously used as elements of a subtle alchemy that transfigures the human body in unison with cosmic vibrations. The Taoist sage is like a log or a pebble, and he flies on the wings of the wind. Precious stones, particularly the diamond, amethyst, turquoise, and quartz, are to the mineral world what the sage is to the world of human beings. The power of the diamond is the great wisdom that surpasses everything, the state of the immortal mortal.
