Keeping Yourself ‘Well, regular circle of good Habits of Food, Dental Care, Bathing
Many of us never worry about our health until we are in danger of losing it. Then we are willing to pay any price, pouring out the savings of a lifetime in a vain attempt to try to win it back again. Our health is our greatest possession. Why should we throw it away through ignorance? There is no substitute for good health. We must take care of it while we have it. Our whole future depends upon our maintaining a sound mind in a healthy body.
Hospitals all over the world are filled with people who have disregarded the laws of health. Some may not have realized their danger. Others knew but did not care. They evidently thought that they could dodge the consequences. Perhaps they did for a while. But eventually even the strongest constitution will break if we continue to disregard the laws of health.
Many a chronic invalid might have enjoyed good health all through his life if he had only known how to keep well. Instead of living a happy life, free from sickness, he has become a burden to himself and perhaps to the community as well. Prevention is always far better than cure. Knowing how to live will keep us out of trouble. It will enable us to live out our years in peace and contentment, free from unnecessary pain and illness.
Keeping germs out of your home is important. It is just as essential to keep them out of your body. Personal cleanliness is one of the secrets of good health. Disease never strikes a person without some definite cause. Any violation of the laws of health brings its own penalty. It is easy enough to blame others for our illnesses, but all too often the real cause lies within ourselves.
Clean habits of living are always the best guarantee of good health. It is not the more robust people who necessarily live the longest. Rather, it is those who take care of themselves and who follow the rules of good personal hygiene. Health is largely a matter of one’s own personal choice.
Nearly all infectious diseases enter the body through three main avenues. These are the nose, mouth, and skin. The person who is clean in his habits will be less likely to come down with some serious infection, provided he takes well-balanced meals and follows the other simple laws of health. Neglect and carelessness are responsible for much unnecessary illness and many deaths.
Regular Healthy Habits Important
Regular habits are always important to health. The whole body follows definite cycles of activity. The heart beats at regular intervals. Our breathing is usually quite automatic and surprisingly regular. Even our sleep patterns are regular, provided we do not overload our digestive organs just before going to bed.
Regular habits of eating are always an aid to health. Irregular meals weaken the system, bringing on nervous symptoms and often opening the way for other types of illness. Haphazard meals are also bad for the health. It is better to eat at properly planned hours. The amount of food will have to be gauged by the needs of the individual, but at least each day’s supply should be approximately the same. This is particularly true when a person is trying to lose weight. Irregular habits of eating only mean more calories in the end.
Bathing is also essential for personal hygiene and cleanliness. A warm bath is a real tonic to the body. No medicines taken by mouth have as widespread an effect as a warm bath. Bathing not only cleanses the skin, it tones up all the tissues. Cold shower baths stimulate the circulation and help to build up one’s resistance against colds and other infections. They make a person feel more alert and ready to enjoy life.
Warm baths are excellent in treating stiffened muscles and creaky joints. The warm water is soothing to the nerves, relaxing tensions and relieving strain and irritability. The cleansing action of soap and water on the skin is beneficial in removing dirt and debris and in keeping open the sweat glands and oil ducts. Frequent bathing helps to keep the skin healthy, as well as making a person feel cleaner and more acceptable in society.
Children should be encouraged to wash their hands thoroughly after using the toilet, which means several times a day. They should also wash their hands when they get up in the morning and upon going to bed. If all adults in the home will set a good example in this respect, the child will do it automatically. Thorough washing of the hands, using a nail brush, is one important way of keeping germs out of the body.
Dental Care. Good teeth begin in early childhood, probably even before a person is born. The mother’s diet has much to do with the proper development of teeth in the young child. During pregnancy it is important for her to have sufficient calcium and phosphorus in her diet. The child also needs these just as much during his growing years. The best sources of these minerals are green vegetables and milk.
Teeth are formed long before they push their way through the gums. If there is a deficiency in diet, the effect will be seen in the shape and condition of the teeth as they emerge from the gums.
Children who are given a balanced diet will be more likely to have better teeth, provided proper
Dental care is given them through their growing years. If the blood stream does not contain the needed building materials, faulty teeth may result. This is especially important when the permanent teeth are forming.
Dental Care: Proper Brushing of Teeth
Proper brushing of the teeth is also important for good dental health. Thorough cleansing of the mouth will remove food particles from between the teeth. When the gums are soft and diseased, the teeth are likely to become loose and may occasionally fall out. Poor general health will contribute to unhealthy tissues in the mouth.
How often should the teeth be brushed? At least twice each day. The teeth should be carefully brushed in the direction in which they are growing. The upper teeth should be brushed from above downward. This should include the gums as well as the teeth. The lower teeth should be brushed from below upward, with the bristles passing along the crevices between the teeth. Both upper and lower teeth should be thoroughly brushed on each side with a sweeping motion to remove any food particles that may have lodged between the teeth. When necessary, a little dental floss may also be used to clean the area between the teeth. It is well to carefully massage the gums, using a softened brush for this purpose.
A clean mouth helps to make an attractive personality and a happier disposition. An unsanitary mouth usually arises from years of neglect. But even in the worst dental conditions there is always something that can be done to improve the situation.
For good dental health it is wise to visit your dentist once or twice each year. Do not wait until you have several cavities. Go and see him now while your teeth are in good condition. If any repair work is needed, do not hesitate to have it done. Your teeth are just as important to your health as they are to your appearance. Do all you can to keep your teeth clean and your mouth in good condition. You will feel happier in knowing that you are not offending others through your neglect.
