Stop Killing Yourself, Dad!
Men, let’s stop putting off that all-important medical checkup. Why not make an appointment right now? Better still, let your wife make it for you. She has even more to lose than you have in this. It is time to see your doctor.
Stop driving yourself so hard. You need more rest. Don’t try to whip up those jaded nerves and flagging muscles by using stimulants. These only cover up the problem. They never solve it. Alcohol, especially when taken to excess, is definitely harmful. The man who is wise will leave it alone.

It is no secret that cancer of the lung is becoming more common every day. Men seem to be particularly susceptible to this disease. Those who get it are almost always heavy smokers. Primary cancer of the lung hardly exists among those who do not smoke.
Smoking also raises the blood pressure. Because it constricts or narrows the smaller blood vessels, this in turn increases the work load of the heart. Tobacco aggravates peptic ulcers and various other digestive complaints. It increases the likelihood of coronary thrombosis. Ladies, before you buy that next carton of cigarettes, think these things over carefully. Your happiness and security may be at stake if your husband is a heavy smoker.
The Problem of Eating
What about diet? This is an extremely important factor in the life of every man. Far too many men seem to prefer diets that are high in fats and wholly inadequate from the nutritional point of view. This kind of thing definitely leads to hardening of the arteries. It will inevitably shorten a man’s life.
Experiments on animals show that diets low in calories and high in minerals and vitamins are best for health. Animals fed on these diets live much longer than those which are given a diet rich in animal fats. This is borne out in human experience as well.
The kind of diet that will keep a man strong and healthy all his life must be adequate in every respect. It should contain sufficient proteins, vitamins, and minerals, and also an abundance of fresh fruits and green vegetables. Foods of this type will keep the blood cholesterol down to a reasonably safe level. They will give a man vigor and vitality and keep his mind clear and bright.
To keep father young and healthy, he must be encouraged to avoid all unnecessary strain. He should have sufficient rest and sleep to restore his energies for the new day ahead. He must learn to take fewer risks. Mother must stop nagging and urging him on to do things that are not really essential. By careful planning and better living he can avoid many a needless illness. If he is overweight, he should set about losing those unwanted pounds right away. These are important steps toward a healthy and happy life.
Keep Him Healthy
Life insurance statistics show that about three out of every four husbands living today will die before their wives do. Some insurance experts, meeting in Rome, have mulled over the problem and come up with the following recommendations for wives:
- Do not let your husband get too fat. If he starts adding pounds, put him on a diet and keep him on it.
- See that he gets plenty of sleep.
- Help him relax. Everybody needs some form of recreation daily.
- Watch out for any sign of illness. Most men will tell you that they feel fine when they really feel terrible.
- Be affectionate. A man can get through a tough day better if he has a happy home life.
How to Preserve a Husband
Be careful in your selection. Do not choose too young. When once selected, give your entire thoughts to preparation for domestic use. Some insist on keeping them in a pickle, others are constantly getting them in hot water. This makes them sour, hard to get along with, and sometimes bitter. Even poor varieties may be made sweet, tender, and good by garnishing them with patience well- sweetened with kisses. Wrap them in a mantle of charity. Keep warm in a steady fire of domestic devotion and serve with peaches and cream. Thus prepared they will keep for years.
