Sex Maniacs and the Single Girl part 3
You can only be medically examined to support your statement with your consent. Rape is very difficult to prove medically. What does a doctor look for? Evidence of semen in the vagina and on clothes, as well as evidence of internal and external trauma, such as lacerations. You can telephone a friend or relative from the police station, and normally they would be allowed to telephone you back.
See a doctor: After you have informed the police go, or get someone to take you, to a hospital or doctor. You have three worries :
- Venereal disease. A hospital may give rape victims preventative penicillin.
- You can wait until six weeks after your last period, get a pregnancy test, and possibly arrange for an abortion if necessary. In case of extreme anxiety the `morning after’ pill can be taken. This is oestrogen, which is only available on a doctor’s prescription. If taken within twenty-four hours of intercourse, this should prevent implantation of the fertilized egg. The oestrogen drug can make some people nauseated and violently ill for the five days it is taken. These factors have to be weighed against the dangers and anxiety of pregnancy. It’s preferable to wait and see whether pregnancy has occurred.
- If you are bruised, cut or even just generally shaken, you may want to get a medical check-up.
If you want a man convicted, possibly deterred from raping others, you have to be prepared to go to court. The proceedings are no longer public. But you may not get a conviction.
Mr Justice Melford Stevenson was reported in The Times to have summed up one rape case saying, `It was, as rape goes, a pretty anaemic affair,’ as he awarded the guilty party a two-year suspended sentence.
This appears to be a male attitude not confined to judges. If a man’s home has ever been vandalized by a burglar, you can tell him that is a tiny little bit like the shock of rape. This is compounded of surprise, then fear, with growing horror, followed by terror, pain, exhaustion, disorientation, and fear of possible disease or actual disease and/or pregnancy. It’s an unclean feeling that you perhaps can’t wash out of your head for weeks or months and which may cause grave psychological damage.
Mud sticks. Rape myths abound. `No decent girl ever gets raped.’ `Every woman really wants to be raped.’ A girl only gets raped if she wants to be.’ (But how would an 8-stone boxer fare against a 14-stone boxer?)
So if you’re raped that’s sad. But what follows when you report it to the police could make you feel worse, unless you are prepared for it. I know it may be considered antisocial, but I feel that a raped woman may suffer less in the long run if she does not go to the police first, but gets to a doctor or casualty ward as fast as possible and then informs the police.
What should you tell the children?
The single girl bothered by sexual perverts can sometimes be very young indeed. What can you tell children to protect them without frightening them about any possible child molester?
It’s best to be as short, clear and factual as possible, in order that there may be no misunderstanding, and no mystery. Don’t beat about the bush no matter how embarrassed you are. Come out and say it calmly and firmly in a matter-of-fact voice.
Don’t merely inform. Try to set up a dialogue so that the child knows that it can ask you or tell you about such things. (If one thing leads to another, two good sex education books for older children are Boys and Sex and Girls and Sex by W. B. Pomeroy, published by Penguin.)
Exhibitionists and child molesters commonly called dirty old men’ are not always dirty and old. Although they can be frightening they are rarely dangerous and generally act the way they do because they are sad, lonely, depressed, frustrated and immature. A child who comes across one should be told not to panic but to immediately tell a grown-up person whom she trusts, even if she would rather not tell a parent. But a child may not be sure. If in doubt … TELL.
Children who are old enough to travel to school on their own should be taught never to be alone in a lonely sort of place, if possible, and to report as soon as possible anything nasty, silly or upsetting to the nearest grown-up in charge, such as the bus conductor. They should also be told:
- Never talk to a stranger who approaches you. (If a child is lost and asks someone the way that’sdifferent.)
- Never take sweets or presents from any strange men or women.
- Never let a stranger touch you anywhere. Not lay a finger on any part of you. If anyone tries, get home as fast as you can, or find a policeman.
- Never get in a strange car or go to a strange place unless it’s with someone you know well.
- Usually adults have the bottoms of their bodies covered. If you seean adult unzip his trousers, move away fast and tell a grown-up. Always immediately report any `rude behaviour’ to the nearest person in authority, whether it be a schoolmaster or policeman. In fact, anyone in uniform will do, or even a taxi driver.
- What if it isn’t a stranger, but a schoolmaster or uncle who is behaving in an undesirable fashion? Tell your mother as soon as possible. It can be most difficult for a child to inform on someone he knows, so this must be emphasized.
The police add that a child should be taught that whenever he or she is in trouble, lost, without any money, or upset in some way, always ask a policeman. If you can’t see a policeman ask someone where a police station is. As soon as possible teach a child to dial 999 and be able to read out the telephone number from which he or she is speaking.
