When I Do Get Sick, I teach what I will do
When, despite all your precautions of good diet, lots of rest, and proper exercise, you do find yourself with a cold or flu, don’t fight it! Listen to Mom and the family doctor, take your medicine, stay in bed, and try to get well. Remember, with a little bed rest and proper treatment, you should be back on your feet again soon.
The best cold-fighting diet is fruits, fruit juices, lots of tea with lemon and honey, and light meals like soups, plain chicken, or fish. Avoid rich foods such as milk, cream, and chocolate, which will only thicken the phlegm in your throat, making you feel worse.
You may find at first that all you want to do is sleep, but when you re on the mend try pampering yourself a bit with some of these at-home treats. They’ll soothe your spirits as well as your body and make the road to recovery more pleasant.
- Fix yourself a cup of steaming herbal tea. Anything with rose hips (loaded with vitamin C) is a good choice. Add lemon and honey and prepare some cinnamon toast while you’re waiting for the tea to cool a bit. Curl up with your favorite magazine and enjoy; it may be difficult to concentrate on a book right now.
- Have a long phone chat with your best girlfriend. Catch up on what’s happening at school, get your assignments, find out the latest doings of other friends and classmates, and just let her warmth and sympathy cheer you up.
- Give yourself a manicure and, if you’re up to it, a pedicure too.
- Reread old diaries and letters. Enjoy the pleasant memories they evoke and let the nostalgia wash over you.
- Put on a favorite piece of classical music, curl up with a shawl or lap robe, close your eyes and really listen to what you hear.
Open a can of chicken broth (great for colds!) and try adding one of the following:
- dash of cardamom
- cinnamon stick and a splash of O.J.
- pinch of grated lemon rind and a teaspoon of honey dash of horseradish or Worcestershire sauce
- tablespoon of pastina (tiny pasta dots) for each cup of broth; let simmer.
While your broth is heating, boil water and fill a hot water bottle according to the directions on the side. Wrap it in a towel or put on heavy socks. Now, hop into bed, rest the soles of your feet on the hot water bottle, and sip your soup. The heat on your feet works wonders for those cold and flu aches.
