You and Your Facial Structure
The oval (top left) is considered the ideal shape, but don’t despair: You can improve on nature by the proper application of shadow base (a shade darker than your foundation) and highlighter (a shade lighter than foundation). (Note: The white areas in the diagram represent the highlighter; shaded areas represent the shadow base). Begin by applying your foundation, then consult the descriptions below for providing your own corrective shaping.
- Rectangular or oblong face. Use shadow base to darken lower jaw and chin. Blend well in all directions. Then apply highlighter on each side of the face between the center of the cheek and the ear. Blend outward.
- Diamond-shaped face. Highlight the jaw and temple areas with highlighter; use darker shadow base to play down cheeks and suggest an oval.
- Pear-shaped or triangular face. Create the illusion of broadness across forehead by adding highlighter; play down fullness of cheeks by adding shadow base as shown in diagram.
- Round face. Apply shadow base directly along and above the jawbone. Blend outward in all directions. Extend shadow all along jawbone directly to lobe of ear and blend outward to cheeks. Use a highlighter on chin, particularly if it is small, to give illusion of greater length.
- Square face. Apply shadow base to both sides of face along the jawbone and blend outward in all directions. Use highlighter on cheeks to soften angles.
- Elongated diamond. Create a shortening effect and broaden facial width by applying shadow base directly under chin (not visible in diagram) and blending carefully in all directions. Apply highlighter to jawbone and blend upward on each side as indicated in diagram.
- Heart-shaped face. Broaden forehead and lower jawline by adding highlighter as shown; if your chin is very pointed, add a little shadow base to soften.
- Short nose? Apply highlighter down center and over tip of nose, then add stripes of highlighter on both sides of dark stripe. Blend well.
- Sharp, thin nose? Place a stripe of shadow base down center of nose, then add stripes of highlighter on both sides of dark stripe; blend well.
