A Coat for All Seasons
If you live in a climate where winter is of any strength or duration, you’ll need a good basic coat to keep you warm and looking great all season long. A coat is a major expense, and therefore represents a major investment. Since you’ll be wearing it so much, it’s essential that you pick one that is exactly right for you. Your Mom will probably want to join you in making a purchase of this size, and you should take advantage of her knowledge. Here are some tips so that you too can be armed with a little knowledge before you’re ready to hit the racks.
Too heavy?In general, pick a slim, single-breasted style rather than a full or double-breasted one. If you do fall in love with a fuller style, try to find a streamlined one with simple details. Note: soft, flat fabrics like wool melton or gabardine are more flattering than nubby textures, bulky tweeds.
Wide hips?Steer clear of conspicuous patch or flap pockets; choose in-seam slash pockets instead. Check the back view too; make sure the vent doesn’t pull when you walk. Avoid the belted wrap look; it will only accentuate your problem area.
Top-heavy?If you’re broad-shouldered or big-busted, try a single- breasted, beltless style with narrow lapels. Avoid epaulets and breast pockets, which will call attention to your over-generous proportions.
Short?Don’t buy a coat with overpowering details like very wide lapels, oversized patch pockets, big belt. Choose a more fitted or tailored style that’s scaled down to your proportions.
Tall?Lucky you! Long ‘n’ lean is the line to look for! But what if you’ve fallen head over heels for a coat that’s too short? It’s OK if your skirt peeps out just a little below the hem of your coat, but one or two inches should be the maximum. If it’s any more than that, you might want to consider having the coat shortened to a seven- eighths length—it’s both stylish and becoming.
Skinny?Shop for a full, belted wrap coat; it will look wonderful and luxurious on your slender frame. Look for padded shoulders, patch pockets as body builders; they add shape and necessary definition.
