Fine Line & Sexy Shape: Put Underneath It All
Lingerie choices for the modern girl abound! Never have you had so many lovely lacies from which to choose. Now the problem is what to wear under what; to get the best fit from your outer clothes, you need to pick the right ones to wear underneath. Study the illustrations on the following to get the lowdown on the undercover story. From left to right, top to bottom, they are:
Camisole.Cozy and toasty warm in winter, this simple little shirt adds warmth without bulk. Look for fine cottons, wools, even silk.
European-style teddy. Features stretch lace for a flattering, closeto-the-body look under blouses, dresses.
Lacy, underwire teddy.Has a built-in bra, functional, easy, and ever so pretty!
Loosefit teddy. Try one in a comfy cotton blend for at-home lounge wear. Or great under full skirts, billowing dresses.
Lace underwire. A “dressy” bra to wear under your party best. If a lacy edge peeps out, it’s OK!
Full-figured bra.Feminine, but functional too. If you’re full- bodied, this is the right choice for you.
Natural look.Has an inset for added “no-show” smoothness under sweaters, clingy tops.
Strapless. A must for those off-the-shoulder strapless looks. Shapes and supports, so you look great in cut-out styles. What won’t work: pulling down the straps of your regular bra; it will only keep sliding and falling, making you feel uneasy—not chic!
Seamless bra. Offers minimal support. Best for the small-busted under knits, T shirts.
Seamless plus. This one’s got something extra: light quilting, to give the illusion of a fuller, shapelier silhouette.
Support bra. Has full, seamless cups, widely spaced straps. Excellent for the full-bodied, because it offers support plus shaping.
Sports bra. Maximum support is a must for jogging, aerobics. Look for cotton blends that let moisture evaporate, avoiding that sticky, wet feeling.
String bikini. The barest brief is barely there! Best for those with sleek, toned legs and hips. Wear it under loose sports gear, skirts, dresses. P.S. Always wear panties under your pantyhose!
V-front bikini. The wide, stretch-lace band and deep V cut make this a great choice for those with a bit of a tummy. The high cut gives a leggy look.
Wrap bikini. This new design eliminates binding and bulges. Wrap also does away with the panty line for new freedom under slim slacks, skirts.
Traditional bikini. Here it features an extra-wide lace stretch band and smooths any ripples, bulges. Since it’s a no-line look, wear it under slacks.
Cotton menswear panty. Definitely a newcomer on the lingerie scene! A great choice under sports or other loose-fitting clothing. For comfort, it can’t be beat.
The hipster. Better than bikinis if your hips need help. Look for stretch-lace insets to smooth out any figure flaws.
High-cut brief. Gives a long, flattering leg look, with no panty line to show.
Control brief. Boasts a reinforced panel for smooth, firm control. Good under snug jeans or whenever you want to feel svelte.
Traditional briefThe old favorite. Look for a pair with stretch lace around waist and thighs for added comfort.
Bloomer brief. A loose-fitting bloomer (great in hot weather) that’s ideal for lounging or at-home sports, workouts.
Tap pants. Flirty, fun panties that your granny might have worn. Wear under skirts, loose trousers.
French pants. Long-legged lovelies, these lacy leggings get their inspiration from men’s boxer shorts, but what a difference! Wear without a slip under lined skirts, dresses. Note side slit!
Underwire smoothy. Eliminates any midriff bulge and provides support on top. Great under dresses, clingy knits.
Full slip.Choose a neutral color (pale pink, peach, beige, white, oyster) for this lingerie basic. Best for those with small busts who don’t need underwire support.
Half-slip. Own a half dozen to go under many lengths of skirt or dress and to accommodate slits. Look for noncling fabrics, pretty detailing.
Her are more hints on how to look great from the inside out!
- The more clingy your clothes, the more streamlined the underwear. Sleek bodysuits, braslips, no-show panties are right here. Billowy clothes or a menswear look? Here’s the place to indulge in ultrafeminine lacy underthings.
- Always look for cotton or cotton-crotch panties. You’ll feel cooler, prevent infection.
- Before you buy a bra, try it on. No two sizes seem to fit alike, so make sure it suits your figure before you take it home. To fit a bra: measure around chest, under arms but below breasts for band size. If result is an odd size, e.g. 33, your correct size would generally be the next larger one, 34. However, some bras are now being manufactured in odd sizes. Next, with bra on, measure across fullest point of bust. If this number is one inch more than band size, then cup size is an A; two inches more = B, etc. Ask yourself the following when trying on bras: Do cups contain your breasts completely? If you bulge out over top, sides, the bra is too small. Does the center of your bra lie flat against the center of your breastbone? If it gaps, the cup size is too small, or you need a different style. Do the straps rest comfortably on your shoulders? If they dig in, loosen them; the cups should provide major support. Is the bra too snug? Cutting or binding means the chest size is wrong.
- Discard any underwear with serious runs, tears, worn elastic or straps. Even though it doesn’t show, it will still make you feel shabby, bring your spirits down.
- Are you small-busted? Then do wear lacy teddies, camisoles. They’re femme and flattering. Don’t think you need a thickly padded bra; it will only look artificial. Do wear a lightly shaped bra that adds subtle flattery.
- Are you big-busted? Never wear a bra that’s too small. Your bust will bulge, resulting in a sloppy look. Do wear a minimizing bra to control, support, flatter. Do wear a bra with adjustable straps to prevent drooping. Finally, don’t wear a white bra that shows through dark or colored clothes; it will emphasize your bust.
