Putting all together ( Hosiery and Socks)
Hosiery
The leg look you opt for can really make or break your total appearance. But never fear, today’s girl has an astonishing number of stockings, panty hose, and socks from which to select. Gone are the days of regulation sheer hose and garter belts that always came unsnapped at the wrong moment. Now, you can choose from dozens of styles and shades of convenient panty hose and socks from dots, plaids, and stripes to sheers and opaques in every color of the rainbow. The list below offers some helpful tips on “snagging” the right leg look.
- Do remember that dark colors will make heavy legs look slimmer; pale tones will fill out legs that are too thin.
- Don’t ever wear panty hose or stockings with runs-it’s asloppy, unattractive look. Save them for wearing under pants. If runs are still visible, discard.
- Don’t forget that legwarmers are a cozy alternative to slacks; layer them on, and off you go!
- Do wash your panty hose by hand in the sink with a mild detergent. Or invest in an inexpensive “lingerie bag”; put hose inside, set machine on the “delicate” cycle. Always let drip dry; never put in dryer.
- Do match your hose to the color of your shoes or a color in your outfit. When wearing all neutrals, like black, you can go for a contrasting hosiery choice: red, glittery gold, paisley.
- Do shave your legs carefully if you plan to wear sheer hose. Otherwise, opt for solid or patterned opaques.
- Do keep hosiery geared to your outfit—wear sheers, glitters at night; nubby textures, subtle patterns for day.
- Don’t wear plain white opaque hose; they’re too nurselike. Try instead very sheer cream, pale pink, silver, or gray. Or go for a white-on-white pattern: checks, stripes, diagonals, or dots.
- Don’t ignore the height and weight charts on the back of the package. Look for your height and weight and pick the pair that’s right for you. Too long, they’ll droop and sag; too short, you’re bound for a tear or run.
- Do use clear nail polish to nip tiny runs in the bud. Cover run once or twice; it should hold for a wearing or two.
- Don’t wear reinforced toes-and-heels hose with sandals or other open-toed shoes; look for sandalfoot hose instead.
Socks
Short ‘n’ sweet or long ‘n’ leggy, the right socks can add punch to your look. Some suggestions for happy sock hunting:
- Do take advantage of the many patterns and colors available in today’s socks. No need to be dull in the foot department anymore.
- Do wear thick, textured or woven socks for days spent outdoors in the city or country. Look for tweeds, argyles, and the like in soft wools, mohairs, and blends. Most socks have some nylon in them to help keep their shape. For real softness, try socks that are woven with some cashmere.
- Do wear anklets with Bermuda shorts and casual lace-ups or flats with a big, circle skirt or cropped pants.
- Do remember that sheer knee-highs can function like panty hose under slacks, very long skirts.
- Don’t forget that heavily perspiring feet are uncomfortable; combat the problem by finding socks that are mostly cotton, so feet can breathe. Result: fresher, drier feet all day long.
