Your everyday bag should be, above all, practical. Since you will probably have a bookbag, you may just want to tuck a little pouch with your essentials inside it. If you do carry a separate bag, make sure it opens easily but is secure too. A bag with a sturdy strap slung diagonally over one shoulder and across the front of your body is a good idea; it’s hard to pull off, but always within view.

Leather is a great material—soft, durable, attractive, but don’t ignore good-quality vinyls, imitation leathers, canvas, or other heavy-duty fabrics. Avoid pale colors—unless they’re washable— except for evening or other special occasions.

A sturdy shoulder bag like a drawstring or satchel in a neutral color is terrific for everyday; smaller bags with thin straps or delicate envelopes or clutch purses are best saved for your evenings out.

Make sure your bag suits your proportions too. If you’re short, don’t carry a big bag; look for something roomy, but with a scaled- down look. Tailored and neat, not slouchy or oversized, are best for you. Taller girls can get away with big, scrunchy sacks and the like; your more statuesque proportions can handle it.

Look for quality and workmanship when you’re buying. Leather lining, finished seams, zippers will make your purchase last longer and look better.
