It is all about Shoes
Never underestimate the statement-making impact of the right shoes; the right pair can really carry your look! Never before have there been so many shapes, styles, materials, and colors from which to choose. Study the list below; how many of these do you own?
- Ballerina flats. Round-toed, flat pumps that are graceful and flattering for all but the very shortest of girls. Have several pair in a variety of colors to meet almost any fashion need, from prom dress to toreador pants.
- D’Orsay pump. A strapless, slip-on shoe with a wedge-shaped heel that widens at top, then tapers to a point.
- Espadrille. A flat shoe with a canvas upper and a flexible, rope or hemp sole. A great summer choice. Try a pair that lace up your ankles teamed with a long, flowing skirt.
- Loafer. A low, step-in shoe, usually in burgundy or brown with a front flap and place for a coin; hence, “penny loafer.” The perfect school and casual shoe.
- Mary Jane. A heeled or flat pump with a horizontal strap crossing the instep. Not for wide feet—it only accentuates the problem.
- Moccasin. A soft leather or suede heelless shoe with the sole brought up the sides of the foot and over the toes, where it is joined by a puckered seam to a U-shaped piece on top. Look for a pair decorated with bright beading, even studded with “jewels.”
- Oxford. Any low shoe that is laced or tied over the instep. Try them in offbeat textures, colors, black patent leather, cranberry suede, to complete a super menswear look.
- Pump. Any slip-on strapless shoe. Heel heights vary; toes can be round, pointed, or square. Low to medium heels are right for daytime wear; save spikes for nighttime allure. This is a very flattering shoe for almost any foot, leg and figure type. Own several pairs, in different textures, colors.
- Saddle shoe. A fifties favorite, this comfy shoe is black ‘n’ white and tied at the instep. Try it for a real retro look!
- Sandal. Any one of many open-toed summer shoes. Can be flats or heels—the summer requires at least two pair.
- Sling-back. A shoe with a closed toe and open back, usually with a heel, that is held on the foot by means of a strap across the Achilles tendon. Can look very sophisticated when worn with a silk dress and pearls or a grown-up looking suit.
- Sneaker. Soft-soled shoe, often of canvas, with reinforced heel and toe and a cushioned sole. Sneakers come in a multitude of styles and colors and for a number of purposes: have a pair for tennis, another for jogging, a third for just knocking about.
- Spectator pump. Like its cousin, above, this too is a slip-on, strapless shoe, but adorned with a particular kind of perforated design, usually in contrasting colors; e.g. navy and white.
- T-strap. A heeled or flat shoe with a strap across the ankle and another strap that bisects it down the center of the foot. A pretty church/ visiting/party shoe.
- Wedge. A comfortable, often casual shoe whose heel tapers in to join the sole, resulting in a solid mass under the shoe. Known for their walking ease.
Boots
Ah, the pleasures of a well-heeled boot! Will yours be leather, suede, calfskin, fur-lined, or silver-toed? Ideally, you should own more than a single pair to get you through the winter warm ‘n’ dry—and in style.
Fashion boots can end in ankle cuffs or go thigh-hi. Generally, low heels or flats look best with pants or casual skirts; high-heeled boots create a dressier look. Usually, these boots have thin soles; they are often made of some delicate stuff that looks great but is not really geared toward protection. Although you can buy special preparations to “waterproof” your suede and leather boots, it’s best to save them for days with no precipitation in the forecast. Rain, snow, and salt can stain and corrode fine materials and spoil your purchase fast.
For rainboots, opt for rubber or vinyl; it will keep you dry on the wettest days. What about a bright red pair and a matching umbrella to chase your rainy day blues?
While rubber and vinyl keep the wet out, they won’t keep you warm when the temperature drops. So look for well-lined snow boots. Think sheepskin, fur, heavy cloth like wool for extra warmth. To add to your protection: rubber or vinyl soles.
