Seven Basic Fragrance Types
The dozens of American and European scents now available for your sniffing pleasure can almost all be placed in one of the seven basic groups described by the Fragrance Foundation:
Single florals—sweet, heady fragrances that seek to capture the essence of a single flower, such as rose, carnation, violet, or lilac. Examples: Bellodgia by Caron; Dior, Dior, by Christian Dior; Muguet des Bois by Coty.
Floral bouquet—an intricately blended bouquet of individual floral notes, which are given balance and richness by a careful combination of base notes such as musk, ambergris, and vetiver. Examples: My Sin, by Lanvin; Red, by Geoffrey Beene; Chloe, by Lagerfeld.
Spicy—fragrances brimming with pungent ingredients such as cinnamon, cloves, and ginger combined with spicy floral aromas. Examples: L’Air du Temps, by Nina Ricci; Windsong, by Prince Matchabelli; Madame de Carven, by Carven.
Woodsy-mossy clean, clear, and crisp fragrances that blend
sandalwood, rosewood, cedar, and other aromatic woods with earthy oakmoss and fern to create fresh, foresty scents. Examples: Calandre, by Paco Rabanne; Rive Gauche, by Yves St. Laurent; Madame Rochas, by Rochas.
Oriental blends—romantic fragrances that suggest the mystery and sophistication of the Far East. Often of an intense and uninhibited power, they contain musk, ambergris, civet, and other such exotic ingredients. Examples: Tabu, by Dana; Cinnabar, by Estee Lauder; Ultima, by Revlon.
Fruity Clean, clear citrus scents that are derived from lemons and oranges and a smooth, peachy warmth. Examples: Eau de Guerlain, by Guerlain; Quartz, by Molyneux; Lauren, by Ralph Lauren.
Modern blends—also called aldehydes. While they may resemble perfumes from the other six categories, they are set apart by their unique brilliance. Examples: Chanel No. 5, by Chanel; Topaze, by Avon; Arpège by Lanvin.
