But Does It Last?
One of the most commonly asked fragrance questions is, “How can I make my fragrance last longer?” A number of factors contribute to the answer, ranging from personal body chemistry (do you know, for instance, that oily skin retains a fragrance longer than dry skin?) to the weather (soaring summer temperatures cause Your scent to fade sooner than in the winter months). But take heart: here are some suggestions on how to keep a good thing going.
Concentration. Not your concentration, but that of the fragrance form you choose. The more concentrated the form (i.e., perfume), the greater the staying power. But there are other ways to attack this particular beauty trap. Experts agree that “layering your scent” as well as remembering to apply touch-ups during the day will result in heavenly scents that last a bit longer on earthly bodies.
Start with perfumed soap. Basic to any bathing or showering experience should be a finely milled fragrant cake or bar. Choose your soap (and all the other products you select from the list below) in a single fragrance note, so that your scents don’t have to compete for attention on your skin.
Bath Oil. Liquid, spray, or capsule, bath oils are an excellent choice in the winter months, when skin has a tendency toward dryness, or at any time for chronic dry skin sufferers. The rich, softening emollients will soothe your skin, leaving it silky, supple, and scented.
Bath salts and crystalsare ideal for oily skins that need less emollient action. These glittering powders will bathe both you and the bathroom with fragrance.
Milk bathsare a good choice for skin that is easily irritated or chafed. The milk component is especially effective in combatting minor problems of this kind (if they persist, however, speak to Mom; it may be time to pay the dermatologist a visit), and the fragrance, of course, will help to keep you sweet-smelling all day long.
Bubble baths.A playful bathing choice. Perfumed bubble baths combine necessity with pleasure and do away with the need for soap. Pour it in, run the tap, and let those bubbles just keep on rising!
Bath and shower gels.Sometimes called gelée, you’ll often find this product in a travel-perfect tube—great for girls on the go. It can be used either as a bubble bath, under a running tap, or as liquid soap when applied directly to a washcloth, sponge, or loofah.
After-bath friction. The high alcohol content of this product makes it a good choice for oily skin. It’s great in hot weather; it helps to keep you cool no matter how high the temperature rises.
Body lotion and body cream. Great all-over moisturizing treatments. Use after bathing or showering for best results, to help lock moisture in. Be generous! Slather on elbows, feet, hands, knees, or anywhere that dryness is a problem.
Bath powder.A fine dusting of a scented powder is a perfect warm-weather fragrance finish. Use to absorb excess moisture and to guard against chafing and wetness.
Scented deodorant.Delicately scented body protection will check perspiration, keep you feeling daisy-fresh for hours.
Learn to use a combination of the products described above. You don’t need to use them all at once (nor would you want to!), but you could try the following combinations: bubble bath, scented powder, and scented deodorant, or bath gel, body lotion, and after-bath friction. Then apply toilet water, cologne, or even a few potent drops of perfume, and you’ll find that your fragrances last much longer.
