Choosing a Scent
Now that you have some idea of the kinds of fragrance that are available to you, you need to determine your own fragrance type or personality. Relax, though; you won’t find it hard work at all. Choosing the perfect scent will be an enjoyable experience.
Experts recommend that you sample a maximum of three fragrances when shopping for a new scent. If you spray on too many, your nose loses the ability to distinguish between them. Also, apply the fragrance directly to your skin when testing it; the true qualities of a perfume or toilet water are not revealed when sampled only from the bottle. Dab it on, and allow the warmth of your body to develop the fragrance on your skin. Ideally, you should wait at least ten minutes after you have applied the fragrance to decide whether or not it is for you. That lets the alcohol evaporate and the blending of the fragrances with your skin’s own unique oils to be at its zenith. Now take a whiff!
Shop for your perfumes and scented products at fine drug and department stores where sampling is not only permitted, but encouraged. You might do some sampling at such a store and then look for your favorites at a discount store, where prices are lower but sampling is not allowed. Don’t, however, spend too much time spraying on perfumes that you have no intention of buying. The testers are there for your convenience, but not for your abuse. Be considerate of the salespeople and of the other customers.
Many stores carry tiny, purse-sized samples that they are happy to give away. Ask the salesperson if the fragrance that interests you is offering such a promotion; you may come away with packets of bath oil, body cream, miniature flacons of perfume—all free!
You should remember that although it may flatter your mom, best friend, or favorite aunt to buy the fragrance that she wears, it may not be so flattering to you. Better try it out in a store before you invest. A fragrance is never the same on any two people. Your own body chemistry responds uniquely to a fragrance, and only by wearing it for a while can you determine if it works for you.
The following is intended to give you an idea how certain scents might match up with certain personality traits.
Sporty
You aspire to a clean, casual elegance and favor classic, well-made garments that let you move easily and yet with style. You’re probably somewhat athletic and a great sports enthusiast. While you always want to look great, you don’t want to sacrifice comfort, practicality, and freedom. You usually opt for well-made pants over any kind of skirt, and your accessories are timeless— never faddish. As a fragrance, you might enjoy …
Anne Klein, by Parlux
Chanel No. 19, by Chanel Babe, by Faberge
Fresh Musk, by Jean Nate Aromatics Elixir, by Clinique
Romantic
Fine linens, antique lace, muted or pastel colors all win with you. You opt for flowers with everything and love long, ruffled dresses, big hats, and delicate accessories such as a woven belt, embroidered slippers, lace gloves. While you may have some thoroughly modern notions, deep down you cling to old-fashioned values and have a profound respect for the past. You treasure heirloom jewelry and trinkets, keep a hope chest and scrapbook, are inclined to be weepy at the movies. Some fragrance choices that would blend well with your style are:
Anaïs, Anaïs, by Cacharel
Forever Krystal, by Carrington Perfumes
Joy, by Jean Patou Je Reviens, by Worth
Tea Rose, by the Perfumer’s Workshop
Lutèce, by Houbigant
Sultry
Exotic and maybe even a little bit wild, you’ve got a bit of the gypsy in your fiery soul. You love experimenting with brilliant and unusual makeup combinations who else would team up violet eyeliner with a shimmering gold shadow?—and delight in your own unique creations. Long earrings, fringed shawls, lace-up sandals, big flouncy skirts, and flamboyant prints all have their place in your wardrobe and are mixed and matched in a manner that is unmistakably you. Some fragrances that might captivate you are:
Diva, by Parfums Ungaro Emeraude, by Coty
K de Krizia
Magic noir, by Lancôme Ninja, by Parfums de Coeur Scoundrel Musk, by Revlon
