Unconscious Mind: Body Imagery
Your unconscious mind is tremendously powerful. It is a source of energy and creativity which—provided you can get in touch with it and turn it toward your desired ends—will work wonders for you. The use of creative imagery specifically geared to slimming can help you harness your own power. Following the principles of creative imagery, here are a few imaginary trips you can take to help you slim. Some will bring insight and increased self-awareness, others will help you get accustomed to yourself as a healthy, lean woman, still others can help you shed old, no longer useful thought patterns that have been hampering you.
It is useful to read each exercise through three or four times before you begin your relaxation, to get familiar with it. These are only examples. Once you get used to using the technique, you can make up your own mind trips. You can practice creative imagery any time but it is often easiest to do when you have just awakened in the morning and are still lying in bed, just before you go to sleep at night, or if you lie down for fifteen minutes during the day. It can be done sitting or lying (whichever you prefer). Begin each exercise either by doing fifteen minutes of meditation or by taking yourself quickly through the progressive relaxation techniques until you have worked through all the different areas of your body. Then go on to the guided fantasy.
The Dungeon
Aim: to make you aware of things that will help you lose weight.
Eyes closed, imagine yourself locked in the dungeon of a castle, deep in the earth with hard stone walls and only one tiny window high in the wall for light. This is a dungeon you have made for yourself by eating too much, too fast, the wrong things, and too often. It stands for all the many times you have failed in the past and all the unpleasant feelings, like frustration and despair, you get when you think about being overweight. Stay in the stone room for a while and look at the walls around you. They are hard and imprisoning but they are entirely your creation. You have made them yourself and you can choose to leave them. As you look around the room notice that there is a large old trunk in one corner. See it. Feel yourself going over to touch it. What is the texture like? Hard? Smooth or rough? Is it bound in metal? Now reach down and open it.
It opens slowly to reveal a bunch of large, old keys. Attached to each key is a tag on which is written something. The keys will open the great door to the dungeon that you have made and set you free. Pick one, read what is written on the tag attached to it. It will tell you something you can do to help solve your weight problem. Now take the key to the door and unlock it. Feel yourself doing this as the metal key turns in the lock and presses against your hand. Watch yourself go out of the door and climb the winding stone steps to the courtyard and the open air. Now open your eyes.
There are many keys because there are many different things that together will help you overcome your weight problem and set you free from imprisonment. Each time you do the exercise you will probably find a different one. This technique can also help when you feel stuck with a problem of any kind. If you let yourself visualize a key attached to a tag on which the answer is written, you can often find the way out.
The New Body
Aim: to accustom you to what it will feel like and be like to be leaner, healthier, stronger, and to encourage a transition from your old body to your new one.
Imagine yourself in a large store with beautiful high ceilings and carpeted floors. It is Sunday and the store is closed so you are alone and free to wander about looking at things and testing things as you choose. What does the room you are in look like? Are there pleasant smells in the air of perfume or cosmetics? Feel the soft pile of the elegant carpet beneath your feet. Now wander about the store until you come to the clothes department. Here there are mannequins wearing all different styles of clothes, some for evening, others for sports, other daytime dresses, suits, slacks, sweaters, and shirts. All of them are lean as you will be. Look at all the clothes. Go along the rails and touch different garments, smell and feel them so they really come alive for you.
The garments in this store are not ordinary garments, they are magic. They have the ability to change the shape of the woman who wears them. The moment you pick out a suit or dress, a swimsuit or a pair of slacks and start to put it on, your body changes shape to suit the garment, and all the garments are in small sizes. Your waist becomes thinner, legs leaner, arms slimmer so that when you look at yourself in one of the many different mirrors around the walls, you see yourself immediately slim and beautifully dressed in whatever you have chosen to wear. Try a swimsuit or a pair of shorts and see how good you look, then think of all the fun you will have in them. Now put on something else, whatever you would like to own, and see how different you feel in it. Now leave the store wearing the new garment. It is yours for the taking. Walk down the street. Notice how the people react to you. Is it different? What do they say? What do they do? Now return to the big store, go back to the place where you found the garment and take it off, placing it on the rail. Dress yourself in your own clothing and leave the store knowing that you can return at any time to try on other garments and the new body that goes with them—the body that you, yourself, will have before long.
This exercise helps you get the feel of getting thinner. When you repeat it again and again it helps you also to begin to think of yourself as lean rather than overweight and to make the important mental and physical transition from one to the other. Finally, it helps eliminate that feeling of being trapped in the same shape and size forever.
