How to Keep Cellulite Away
The first and most important rule is don’t take into your body too much of the wrong kinds of foods in the first place. This includes all forms of refined carbohydrates, all overprocessed, precooked, or pickled foods, and prepared meats. Alcohol and coffee are major pollutants. If you are really serious about remaining cellulite-free, then avoid them altogether and drink spring water or fresh, unsweetened fruit or vegetable juices, or herb teas sweetened with a teaspoon of honey.
Smoking is also taboo when it comes to the prevention of cellulite, for two reasons. It robs the system of vitamin C, which is essential for the health of collagen, the connective fibers that support muscles and skin and the circulatory system. When the collagen fibers start to go it is very hard indeed to get rid of cellulite. Also, nicotine in the system interferes with the circulation so that cellular exchange, vital to keeping the body free of tissue sludge, is drastically slowed down. This creates ideal conditions for cellulite to form.
Although proper nutrition is the single most important thing in protecting yourself from cellulite (and, incidentally, in removing it when it has formed) it is by no means everything. Getting enough regular exercise is also essential. So is learning to breathe properly, which only takes about ten minutes a day to practice and is one of the most helpful ways of clearing your system of substances that can cause internal pollution problems. And, finally, so is some form of deep relaxation or meditation practiced daily to calm your tensions and put your body and mind into the passive vegetative state in which the body can regularly restore itself from the ravages of stress. Read the sections on dealing with stress, relaxation, breathing, and exercise. But don’t just take them in for interest’s sake, put each of them into practice. The knowledge will be worth nothing unless you use it. For cellulite is not some mysterious aberration that suddenly appears. It is a whole body problem. And as such it requires whole body methods of prevention and cure.
What to do when you’ve already got it
Apart from getting onto the regimens outlined above and staying on them, you should use special methods of detoxifying your system and giving the wastes stored in the tissues a chance to be removed from the body. The problem has to be attacked simultaneously from within and without. From within, put yourself on a spring cleaning regimen of raw foods to encourage waste elimination and improve the rate of cellular exchange.
Two other useful dietary tools are the water fast and the Rohsafte-Kur which, in my experience, is better than anything else in helping to eliminate tissue sludge quickly. You should not stay on it for more than two or three days unless you are under medical supervision, but this is all that is necessary to get the ball rolling. Then you can go onto the Spring- cleaning Diet, or better still, alternate the two—five or six days a week on raw foods interspersed with one or two days on the Rohsafte-Kur juice fast.
There is no reason why you cannot stay on a raw food regimen for quite a while, even several weeks if necessary, until most of the cellulite problem is cleared up. If you choose to do it a slower way, after a few days on the Spring-cleaning Diet, eat normally, simply avoiding the bad foods and making sure (and this is important) that at least half of all your foods are eaten raw. Besides providing you with the optimum concentration of vital nutrients, this helps protect you from hidden constipation, one of the main culprits behind both cellulite and varicose veins. If you happen to be on a reducing diet where the amounts of food you are eating are greatly restricted, then you should take some bran—two or three teaspoons is usually enough sprinkled on plain yogurt, on salads, or stirred into a glass of fresh vegetable or fruit juice. But you must drink lots of water with it. For bran only does its job effectively when there is plenty of water in the system to develop its bulk.
Here are some vegetable and fruit juice combinations that are particularly good for clearing tissue sludge from the system:
FORMULA 1
Carrot-4 ounces Celery-2 ounces
FORMULA 2
Carrot-3 ounces Beet-2 ounces Cucumber-2 ounces
FORMULA 3
Carrot-4 ounces Celery-2 ounces Apple-2 ounces
FORMULA 4
Carrot-4 ounces Watercress-1/2 ounce Cabbage-11/2 ounces
FORMULA 5
Orange-4 ounces
Try to drink at least two glasses a day. Also make sure you get plenty of water in order not to put too much strain on the kidneys, which will be dealing with some pretty concentrated wastes as your system begins to clear. If you are on an all raw food diet, with vegetable or fruit juices two or three times a day, you won’t have to worry about taking any extra water. Raw fruits and vegetables are mostly water. If you are only eating half of your foods raw, then in addition to the two or three glasses of juice a day you should drink another pint of pure water. A French mineral water, Contrexéville, is particularly good for cellulite- prone women because of its high mineral content and its tendency to release stored water from the tissues.
There are also some herb teas that are particularly good for cellulite sufferers either because of their blood purifying capabilities or because they are natural diuretics and encourage the elimination of excess water from the tissues.
Mate tea is a tonic for the kidneys, a tension soother, and is so satisfying to drink that you feel less inclined to eat. It is nice taken plain or with a squeeze of lemon in it.
Solidago tea (wild goldenrod) is an excellent natural diuretic and a mild stimulant. It is a favorite for spring-cleaning the system at the BircherBenner Clinic in Zurich.
Nettle tea is another diuretic and tonic, excellent for the lymphatic system. It doesn’t taste as nice as solidago, so needs to be sweetened with a little honey.
Many experts in orthomolecular medicine and megavitamin therapy believe that food supplements can help protect against internal pollution and in elimination. Vitamin C is the detoxicant par excellence provided you take enough of it—that is, measure the doses in grams and not milligrams. Vitamin E, because of its stimulating effect on the circulatory system and because it has been shown to offer protection against pollution and some forms of irradiation, is also useful. And recent research shows that one of the finest protectors of all is dietary fiber from whole grains, bran, and raw fruits and vegetables.
