My top ten keys to long-term success
- Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Learn from it and put it behind you. If, at any stage, you find you are slipping and the programme is not working, go back to the things that did work – sharpen up your focus again and look at the basics; exercise, nutrition and monitoring.
- Spend plenty of time on your successes. Make something out of them. Find ways to reward yourself for doing it right and getting to your short- term goals. Try to set the goals so that they are at least achievable – there is great power in feeling that you have actually over-achieved.
- Don’t beat yourself up for not doing things right. Give yourself every bit of encouragement to keep going and only use the past as a way of learning how to do it better.
- Plan your food consumption. Be aware of how much you need; when to consume and where. Note any changes to the plan so that you can see if there is a pattern or habit that needs to be changed or even broken.
- Take regular exercise that you enjoy. Don’t go for activities that give you no pleasure just because they’re meant to do you good. If you have always hated the very thought of exercise then at least look for ways to make it less painful by adding in a social dimension. For example, go walking with friends, or go dancing with a partner whose company you relish. Or take a Walkman to the gym and listen to your favourite music, or listen to tapes of books you may not always have time to read.
- Keep your focus. Always remind yourself what you want to do with your body and why. Never forget you have a choice and that choice is yours and yours alone. Think about getting the balance right between where you want to get to and the price you are willing to pay to get there. Accept the choice you make. Do not give yourself mixed messages – for example, wanting the ‘perfect body’ and at the same time not having enough hours in the day to work out, to the point where that is achievable, because the job and the family have to fit in somewhere too!
- Remember that life is not perfect, and nor are people. Sometimes compromises are necessary.
- Get the important things into your life first. The rest will always find a way to fill in the gaps. If you don’t get those key things in, they will often not get into your life at all.
- Remember you are not alone. You can build a team around you who will help you with your goals. You can join one of the many Warriors courses that will enable you to see the programme in action and meet others who could form a valuable support group for you.
- Have an ‘inner coach’ to guide and support you. This figure can be with you, if you will let him, at all times. Most of all have fun and enjoy your Warrior programme. It has a very serious purpose, of course – it saved my life, and you may well find that it saves yours too!
