The Magic of Makeup
When you use makeup, you are practicing the age-old art of illusion. But the illusions makeup offers you are subtle ones, not complete changes of character, age, and coloring. Try to achieve that, and you carry the use of makeup too far; then, instead of being your friend, it will suddenly become an enemy and make you look foolish, too old, or simply less well than you could look. So the first rule of good makeup is simple: Never try to change your face with it.
After that has been said and after you have come to terms with the fact that whether or not you like it, your jaw is square or your eyes small or your skin a different color from what you ideally would like, then there is a lot you can do with color to make you look better. And that, after all, is what making up your face is all about. Whether you are after a freshly scrubbed, natural look (which incidentally takes a lot more artifice to achieve than you might imagine) or a more elaborate-looking, sophisticated face, the makeup you choose and the way you apply it should make you look more attractive, more interesting, healthier, and simply more yourself.
The Naked Face
What about going without makeup? Great—provided you are healthy and your skin is good and provided you wear a moisturizer and sunscreen day in, day out for protection. Half of my life is spent without even the faintest touch of makeup. There is something I like about the “honesty” of an un-made-up face. When you blush, it shows. When you are tired, it shows. When you are really well and vital, there is no mask to cover up the translucence of your skin. A naked face can be beautiful. Indeed, why should any woman feel she has to wear makeup simply because most do?
The Magic Theater
On the other hand, makeup is great fun. It can be a real pleasure to apply and to wear, because there is so much you can do with it. That is why the other half of my life is full of it. I find it somehow exciting to begin each morning by deciding what colors I want to wear that day and how
I want to wear them—according to my mood or my imagination. You can also vary your makeup colors according to what clothes you are wearing or to go with the feeling of fashion of the time. The one essential thing about wearing makeup, however, is that you don’t get into a rut with the same old lipstick all the time year after year. Nothing dates a face like wearing the same colors applied the same way over and over again.
No Excuse for Neglected Skin
Long ago, makeup was worn to cover up defects in the skin. Like a mask, it covered over everything in a world where women still wore “falsies” in their bras to make their bosoms bigger, boned waist cinchers to make their middles smaller, and lots of hair pieces to give them the look of a Hollywood extravaganza. No longer. Makeup, like everything else in fashion and beauty today, is not something obviously artificial. Product textures are lighter and smoother, and the modern look in makeup is one of natural clear skin, no matter how much color you choose to put on your eyes and cheeks. If your skin is less than perfect, spend your time and money on getting it into shape before indulging in makeup products and colors.
