What if The Diet Isn’t Working?
What if you have made it to the end of week three, can see improvements but you are just not losing weight. What has gone wrong?
I can understand how frustrating this must feel. No single diet works for everyone, as there are many different causes of weight gain. The possible reasons below may explain what is holding you back.
Are you losing inches rather than weight?
This is good news. It means that you are making lean muscle, which is heavier, but has the capacity to burn more fat. Keep going. The weight loss will follow.
Are you are still drinking alcohol, sugary drinks and/or caffeine? If you are and you’re not losing weight, it is time to bite the bullet and give them up.
Are you exercising regularly?
Exercise really does help kick-start your metabolism. If yourweight isn’t shifting, then you need to increase your levels of activity.
Are you taking the supplements?
Supplements do make a difference and, in addition to the basic multivitamin and vitamin C, the combination of chromium, HCA and 5-HTP definitely gives you the edge in appetite control.
Have you had an allergy test?
Don’t underestimate the impact of food sensitivity and allergies. Your weight can really get stuck until you remove an offending food. Have a food-intolerance test and avoid your problem foods for a few weeks.
Are your hormones out of balance?
It is possible that you are oestrogen-dominant. Hormonal imbalances can stop you losing weight. You need to get this checked by your doctor, who will advise whether you need to be tested for an underactive thyroid.
I often lose weight fast, but then it all comes back again. What’s going on and why can’t I lose weight?
The first 4lb (2kg) lost on any diet is inevitably water, not fat. Why do we lose water? It is because the excess sugar from food does not turn straight from glucose into fat. When your glucose level is too high, the body stores it first as glycogen (which is very similar to glucose) and it can be released very rapidly if you’re lacking in glucose.
Fat is the long-term store; glycogen is the short term store.
We all have roughly the same amount of glycogen in our bodies.
It is stored mainly in the muscles, with some in the liver - and it is stored with water. When you run out of glucose, because you have reduced your carbohydrate intake, your body starts to break down your glycogen to create more glucose. When this happens you lose all the water it’s stored with at the same time - and that’s why you lose up to 4lb (2kg) of water on a very low-carb diet. Ultimately, however, your body will replace the missing glycogen - and the water it isstored with - because the body needs it to survive.
The major cause of obesity is an increase in sugar and refined carbohydrate, not an increase in fat.
Different sources of calories have different effects on weight loss.
Eating a low-GL diet triggers more rapid weight loss than any other diet.
If you eat too few calories your metabolic rate slows down to conserve your fat, so your body sends out an instruction to store more weight.
High-protein diets stabilise your blood sugar levels and reduce your appetite, but they are nutritionally unbalanced and put too much stress on your liver, so they are not good for you in thelong run.
Low-fat diets are bad for you because the body needs essential fats and keeps craving fats until it gets them. Depriving your body of fat altogether will just increase the craving even more.
I hope that in looking at these solutions you find the one that is likely to work for you. Be patient, be persistent, and good luck.
