CHANGING THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
A psychotherapist who had been depressed many years before told me that after weeks of lying in bed feeling hopeless, the first change came when he got up, changed his sheets, cleaned his room and opened the windows in order to let the air and sun in.
Whether or not the state of your room, your home or your work-place was significant in depressing you, changing yourenvironment can be very helpful because:
- The act of cleaning outside makes you feel cleaner inside.
- The activity gets your body and mind moving.
- You can give yourself small tasks which are accomplishable. Completing a task, however small, provides a glimmer of better feeling about yourself.
- You end up with a brighter environment to be in, which reminds you of the positive step you have made, and feeds you with a good feeling every day.
Even if you do not usually do these things, consider some of these as possibilities: cleaning your house; dusting and shining indoor plants; cleaning and re-arranging cupboards and drawers; doing any gardening job you enjoy; cleaning your car; re-arranging the furniture in a room; decorating a room. It is important not to take on a job that is too big. One completed task gives a little hope.
