Treating the Physical Cause
With the possible exception of pre-menstrual tension, which can sometimes be treated hormonally (see below), depression is rarely caused by a treatable physical ailment. However, when it is, it is important to know so that the cause can be treated. If, after going through the physical factors chart, you are concerned about a possible physical condition, have a medical check-up as soon as possible, so that you can remove that doubt and get on with treating and changing your depressed state.
DIET
If you think your diet may be inadequate or imbalanced, look into it seriously and experiment with a healthier and more appetizing diet. Preparing your food well and concerning yourself with what goes into you is itself an exercise in caring about yourself and thus a powerful antidote to depression. However, don’t be depressingly strict and over-conscientious. If you start to feel low and lethargic in the late morning, as opposed to waking kip feeling bad, consider the possibility that your breakfast contains too much carbohydrate and too little protein, and if it does, try changing the balance. Increased intake of the B and C vitamins may make you feel better if you are currently deficient in them. They have no known side-effects.
PYRIDOXINE
Sometimes depression while taking the contraceptive pill and pre-menstrual depression may be related to a deficiency in pyridoxine (vitamin B6). This can be both diagnosed and corrected by taking pyridoxine — if pyridoxine helps, you needed it, and if it doesn’t, it’s harmless.
Side-effects: none.
Dose: 50 mg tablets: one tablet, two or three times a day. Try them for one month to see if they are effective.
